Marion Barry Has Full-On Twitter Tantrum

If you are not following former mayor and current Washington, D.C., city councilman Marion Barry on Twitter, you certainly should be.

This past weekend, Barry had a full-on Twitter tantrum directed at local NBC reporter Tom Sherwood. Sherwood, on the city beat of sorts in D.C., has been doggedly following Barry for years and has chronicled the politician’s rise and fall in his 1994 work, “Dream City: Race, Power, and the Decline of Washington, D.C.,” co-authored with Harry Jaffe.

Barry’s beef? He’s not at all happy that the book has been optioned by HBO for a new biopic, with Eddie Murphy slated to play the disgraced former mayor.

Barry vented on the social media network at 9:44 a.m.

And then again at 9:46, 9:48, 9:50 … well, you get the idea. Here, read for yourself:

Barry One

Barry Two

Apparently, Barry is sore at reporter Tom Sherwood. Why, Sherwood as a reporter, reports on Marion Barry.

Sherwood did not respond to any of the above tweets. He did tell local NPR affiliate WAMU that, “I just have the greatest respect for” Barry. Adding that “I know the whole story, we told it in ‘Dream City.’ But that doesn’t mean that I sugarcoat anything he says or does that I think is not good or … is shown not to be good.”

What also annoys me, BuzzFeed. The site decided to jump in here. Between creating lists such as the Top 10 libraries to make out in or quizzes to find out what “Little House on the Prairie” character you are, BuzzFeed in an article called Barry a “beloved figure in Washington.” If any statement is deserving of an asterisk by it, it is that one. In the article, the author notes that “Sherwood is the co-author of Dream City, which will serve as the basis for the money.” I assume they mean film and not money there. But that should tell you what BuzzFeed has on its mind a great deal of the time.

To their credit, it did mention Barry’s arrest for crack cocaine in 1990.

It should be noted that Barry’s autobiography is due out next month. It has the modest title of “Mayor for Life: The Incredible Story Marion Barry, Jr.”

Barry also has some anger toward Spike Lee, who is set to direct the picture:

Barry Three

Stay classy, Marion.

HBO’s “Dream City” is currently in production. Barry, 78 , holds the Washington, D.C., Ward 8 city council seat with no plans to retire any time soon.
