A NATION INSANE WITH FEAR, MALAWI MOBS LYNCHING PEOPLE SUSPECTED OF VAMPIRISM
In what sounds like a more fitting script describing the End of Days, horrifying news coming out of Malawi includes roaming mobs murdering people who are accused of being Vampires. The situation is so untenable that the United Nations and other invaluable aid agencies are pulling back their resources and personnel. The anxiety and fear of vampires has created a truly scary situation, with multiple deaths.
AT LEAST 8 MURDERED AS VAMPIRES, UNITED NATIONS EVACUATES PERSONNEL OVER SAFETY CONCERNS
At least eight people have been killed, prompting United Nations staff to evacuate out of safety concerns, according to Reuters reports. Malawi is a southeast African country which is bordered with Mozambique, Zambia as well as Tanzania. Malawi is one of the world’s poorest countries, where fear often becomes a dangerous factor combined with systemic poverty. Recently, another surge of fear of vampires in Malawi’s two southern districts of Phalombe and Mulanje has resulted mobs who are lynching and killing people suspected of vampirism.

“These districts have severely been affected by the ongoing stories of blood sucking and possible existence of vampires,” the United Nations Department of Safety and Security released in a security report. The U.N. has relocated some but not all of their personnel in the two rural districts due to serious safety concerns, and is also closely monitoring continuing events in the area as they develop.
MOBS EVEN SET ROADBLOCKS TO TRAP AND KILL SUSPECTED VAMPIRES
The same report also said the mobs even set up roadblocks to trap suspected vampires, and that the vampirism suspicions might have originated in northern Mozambique. The report recommends the “temporary suspension of U.N. activities in the area until the situation is normalized.” Non-government organizations (NGOs) that are providing aid and resources to the area have also decided it’s prudent to pull out.
VAMPIRES AND WITCHCRAFT ACTIVELY FEARED IN MALAWI, AS VAMPIRE THREAT CREATED CHAOS IN 2002 AS WELL
Belief in witchcraft as well as the real-life existence of vampires is widespread in rural Malawi, with the latter superstition perpetuating both paranoia and violence, and it’s not for the first time either. During a devastating famine back in 2002, vigilantism erupted after a viral rumor circulated the idea that vampires were secretly working with the government to collect blood for international aid agencies.
Women and children loudly claimed they were the victims of blood thieves, and terrified villagers also abandoned their fields. Malawi government leaders then publicly denied both the existence of vampires and the conspiracy itself, which they said was a malicious fabrication created to undermine the government. Still unsatisfied, the vigilantes took the law into their own hands, stoning to death a man accused of being a vampire for the public to see. Three Roman Catholic priests were also beaten and detained overnight by an entire village.
But people accused of vampirism are not the only victims. In Malawi, Mozambique, and Tanzania, people with albinism are regularly murdered and dismembered, part of their body then sold for witchcraft rituals. It’s enough of an ongoing horror that Amnesty International reports the situation as a “human rights crisis” because Malawi’s albino population faces possible “systemic extinction.”
The U.N. human rights council’s expert on albinism and an albino herself, Ikponwosa Ero reported last year that albinos are specifically targeted because of a superstitious belief that their body parts “can increase wealth, make businesses prosper, or facilitate employment.” And of course, there is a driving economic motivation to butcher people to simply make money.
“Malawi is one of the world’s poorest countries and the sale of body parts of persons with albinism is believed to be very lucrative,” said Ero.
Sanguivoriphobia is the fear of vampires, the direct translation comes to “fear of blood eaters.”
