US-Mexico Authorities Find Longest Tunnel for Smuggling, Ever

MEXICAN AUTHORITIES FIND THE LONGEST US-MEXICO SMUGGLING TUNNEL, BY FAR

So I can’t help but recall a scene from one of the Fast & Furious films where they drove under the US-Mexico border crossing.  Well, raced across I suppose is a better description.  It seemed ludicrous.  But that’s because it was.  Yet authorities in Palm Springs, California found something just as ludicrous.  But real.  No, you couldn’t drive a car thru it.  But this is bar far the longest smuggling tunnel we’ve ever seen (so far) at our Southwest border.  Just the simple facts of this thing are amazing to hear.  It’s more than three quarters of a mile long!

LONGEST SMUGGLING TUNNEL EVER STRETCHES 4,309 FEET LONG, OVER 3/4 MILE

So here are the real numbers.  The tunnel is 4, 309 feet long.  On one end, it opens in Tijuana, Mexico, roughly half a mile from the Otay Mesa Port of Entry.  On the other end, it opens into the Otay Mesa warehouse district.  So on the American side, Border Patrol agents found hundreds of sand bags blocking the exit.  Smugglers had been working on a separate line to the surface which they never finished.  Hearing about this almost has to make you wonder if the war on drugs is just a pipe dream.

LONGEST TUNNEL WAS MASSIVE ENGINEERING INVESTMENT WITH FORCED AIR, POWER, DRAINAGE AND RAIL SYSTEM

So here are some more amazing details about this tunnel.  It averaged about 70 feet below the surface.  It’s roughly 5’ tall and 2’ wide.  But at the entrance in Mexico, it even had an elevator!  But that’s not all.  This tunnel was a serious investment.  It also featured a rail & cart system, forced air, a high-voltage line as well as comprehensive drainage.  Mexican officials first discovered the tunnel last August.  Authorities from both countries have mapped it from that end.  So what was the previous, longest tunnel under the border?  Only 2,966 feet.

But here’s what I can’t help thinking.  I think that tunnel was played out and the smugglers have another, better option.  Otherwise, how did Mexican officials officially find it?
