THE LONGEST SNAKE IN THE WIDE, WILD WORLD WAS JUST FOUND IN INDONESIA
I don’t hate snakes. But let’s just say that I don’t find them to be the most tantalizing of creatures. I stepped on a garter snake in the dark last Fall in my backyard. How do I know? Because the damn thing bit my calf and I saw it before it took off. To be fair, I did step on the 3 footer as it was hunting before things got cold. But let’s face it, snakes aren’t lovable. It could be that they’re literally cold blooded. And some are venomous. And then again, some can be really, really big. So I shudder to think about what would have happened if I had stepped on the longest snake ever found in the world. In the dark. Well, and I would have had to have been in Indonesia.

GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS CONFIRMS 23′ 8″ IS WORLD’S LONGEST SNAKE IN THE WILD
But this is actually official, as the Guinness World Records has confirmed that a reticulated python found in the Maros region of Indonesia is the longest snake ever found in the wild. Well, and measured just to be sure. And this female specimen totaled a terrifying 23 feet with an extra 8 inches added on. Licensed snake handler Diaz Nugraha and natural history photographer Radu Frentiu went looking in Maros after they heard rumors of people seeing an incredibly long snake. Clearly, they found it without too much trouble.

APPROPRIATELY, THE WORLD’S LONGEST SNAKE IS CALLED IBU BARON, OR “THE BARONESS”
Adult reticulated pythons tend to be full sized between 9’10” and 19’2″. So this newly discovered longest snake in the world is over 4 feet longer than the longest tend to be. That’s over 20% longer, or a virtual Wembanyama longer. But to be fair, Ibu Baron “The Baroness” is a female snake. Nugraha and Frentiu named her, and is in their care with the conservationist Budi Purwanto. Reticulated pythons are native to southeast Asia, are good swimmers and, yes, constrict their prey to eat them. And also yes, they have eaten people, too. I’m guessing the world’s longest snake, Ibu Baron, eats what she wants.
You can see video of her being measured here.
