Library Finds Magazine with Late Fee After 51 Years

STOLEN MAGAZINE RETURNED TO LIBRARY WITH LATE FEE AFTER 51 YEARS

So I love libraries.  But I knew libraries before this whole internet thing and you could watch any movie on something that fits in your hand.  But libraries have managed to stay pretty relevant today, even though it’s harder to do more with less.  Sure, you always felt like you committed a sin when you returned something late.  But every librarian seemed to have this power like the Pope when it came to receiving a book or anything else, late.  Plus, there was that formalization.  You can’t come back to church until you pay a tithe.  Well, a late fee, anyway.  But it felt brutal when I was a kid.  So it’s amazing to hear about someone returning a magazine from 51 years ago!

SOMEONE STOLE LIFE MAGAZINE FROM LIBRARY BACK IN 1968

The library is the Cuyahoga County Public Library.  The library has been around for some time, which is saying something.  The magazine was a Life Magazine from the year 1968, which is also the year that it went missing.  This is so long ago that the cover of the magazine was the Beatles!  So I looked it up online and it  was the Life Magazine from September 13, 1968, “the days and the lives of the Beatles.”  That was it!  Back then, you didn’t have a summary of the magazine on every cover.  Just the main story.

SOMEONE SEEMS TO BE DOING THE 12 STEP PROGRAM, WELL DONE!

So anyway this piece of history returned to the library.  One day, an anonymous package arrived at the library.  When the librarians opened it, they discovered the magazine missing for more than half a century.  There was also a check in the amount of $100 to cover any “late fee.”  But the package also contained a note!  It said, “I stole this magazine from the Parma Ridge Road Library when I was a kid. I’m sorry I took it. I’ve enclosed a check for the late fee.”  Sounds like someone is doing the 12 steps.  Bravo! But even better? The magazine in “good” condition is worth $80!
