Lay Techie Makes Guided Missile For Only $96

AMATEUR, LAY TECHIE MAKES HIS OWN STINGER GUIDED MISSILE FOR ONLY $96

If you’ve been following any news, you probably have the word “missile” inscribed somewhere between your prefrontal cortex and hippocampus.  What that really means is even if you don’t actively follow the news, you’ve been exposed to headlines involving missiles being fired by the United States, Israel, Iran, Hezbollah and even possibly North Korea.  And yes, that’s a LOT of missiles.  Smart missiles, guided missiles, cluster missile warheads, and more.  And these are expensive.  Like, really expensive.  A Stinger missile costs somewhere between $120,000 and $480,000.  EACH.  So it’s fairly astounding that a lay techie (or hobbyist) made his own Stinger-type guided missile for only $96.

MOST OF THE STINGER GUIDED STINGER MISSLE WAS 3D-PRINTED, CHEAP

The lay techie is one Alisher Khojayev.  He really did make a working, shoulder-mounted guided missile for less than 100 USD.  The damn thing includes a launcher, the missile itself, and even an optional camera-based tracking system.  Khojayev 3D-printed most of it, and used cheap ESP32 microprocessors to make it work.  And yes, he really did model it after a Stinger-type MANPADS system.  All you have to do is flip a switch to link the launcher and the control computer to calculate ballistics.  Flip the second switch and it connects to the rocket, and adjusts the movable wings to steer it.

CHEAP DRONES AND MISSILES KEY TO TODAY’S WARFARE, AND ANYONE CAN MAKE THEM

Currently, the U.S. Air Force’s CAMP program is trying to reduce each Stinger launch cost down to $500,000.  This lay techie did it himself, 5,000 times cheaper.  As impressive as that is, it’s actually rather terrifying.  Ukraine and Russia have already redefined modern warfare with cheap, weaponized drones.  And weaponized drones currently have a maximum range of over 13,600 miles; that range is about to double.  So it’s probably a good thing that a lay techie made a cheap Stinger missile system, since that’s the best way to kill drones.  But it’s also terrifying because private hobbyists around the world can now make serviceable, cheap weapons.

And use them.
