This has happened a number of times. I get a call from a girlfriend and it’s quickly clear that someone she loves did something unspeakable. “I’ll be right there!” I yell and gather up an arsenal of wine and junk food kept for crises and boredom. Rushing over, I gear up for a lot of eating and crying. After an embrace, I bust out the chocolate and Cheetos as she confesses, “I’m too sad to eat.” We laugh about the fact that even though she’s super down she’s going to get super hot, knowing that this is an awful observation that’s also true. Then I eat all the Cheetos, because that’s what friends are for.
If there is any star familiar with the paradox of looking great while feeling terrible, it’s Khloe Kardashian. She has been photographed everywhere in recent weeks, wearing a brave face, wedding ring, and a frame that is shrinking before our eyes. Whether it’s temporary loss of hunger or rage-driven workouts, heartbreak looks good on Khloe. The media agrees, with stories mounting about her marriage that all mention she’s never looked better. The Huffington Post called her “smoking” and E! Online noted that her time in the gym had been paying off. If breakup weight loss was a product, this would be her promotional tour.
Like with most relationship news, the speculation circulating overshadows the facts. In the real reality as opposed to the TV reality, there have been very few new developments about the decline of Klomar. We know that Khloe is wearing her wedding ring, she’s not publicly pursued a divorce, and she is definitely not staying in very much. With her increased visibility, it’s easy to tell she’s been affected by such estrangement. People can see the confidence in her union shrink along with her waistline. She can be as quiet as she wants, but the breakup weight gives her away.
Kardashian isn’t starving, nor is anyone advocating that. Instead, she is likely indulging in a common heartbreak solution: hyper self-improvement. And after all she’s been through, fans are thrilled to see her being a major babe in the face of adversity. Back in April 2011, Khloe’s weight was called out by her own mother on an episode of “Khloe and Lamar.” She publicly talked about such scrutiny, saying, “I’m the fat one. I’m the transvestite.” She was also met with speculation that Robert Kardashian was not her real father, partially due to the fact that she doesn’t look like her sisters. Now Khloe’s endured hearing about her husband’s binges on drugs and women for the better part of a year.
If you’ve ever watched or been forced to watch “Keeping Up With the Kardashians,” Khloe is likely the one character that kept you from jumping out a window. She was a woman fans rooted for long before her mom called her fat and her husband cheated on her. Her level of likeability is what makes her seem adopted when compared to the rest of her family. Now even more people are rallying around Khloe, seeing her improved physique as a shallow win, but still a small win that she deserves.
Khloe may be a protagonist for people, but she successfully avoids being the victim. Regardless of the outcome, Khloe has gained a lot from her relationship and stands to profit even more from ending it. Their one-month romance turned televised marriage amounted to 3.2 million viewers and two seasons of their spin-off show, “Khloe and Lamar.” Despite the impulsive wedding and subsequent financial gain, the chemistry and humor between the couple made viewers believe this was a marriage and not a merger. If it’s over after four years, this was still a productive partnership that lasted significantly longer than most married one month in.
Making it through their recent anniversary, Khloe is now entitled to an additional $2 million if they get divorced. She will gain significantly more money if she can prove Lamar’s seemingly obvious infidelity. What she stands to earn from divorcing Lamar has sparked further speculation about her motives for the delay. While she has claimed to be worried about Lamar’s well-being, some suspect she’s waiting for a bigger payout, either from her prenup or in the form of television ratings, perhaps both.
Khloe Kardashian lives her life on a bad voluntary version of “The Truman Show,” so it’s hard to judge her for making money off of what is no one’s business. She has been careful not to act, allowing conjecture to punctuate commentary about how great she looks. All this while new episodes of “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” air. Khloe may have a relationship struggle in front of her, but her inappropriately publicized struggle with weight is over. Her heartbreak is morphing into a killer revenge body, which further connects her to fans who’ve experienced the same phenomenon. Continuing to seem like a real person will only increase her popularity. Khloe’s vulnerability is being used as a career asset, making us feel like she’s our close friend in crisis. This means I’ll be eating all the snacks.
