Justice League Film Goes Skimpy on Amazon Costumes

AMAZON COSTUMES, SENSIBLE LEATHER ARMOR?

So, Patty Jenkins directed Wonder Woman and hired a female costume designer to design the Amazon’s look based on realism and practicality.  Amazons fought and flew in the air during battles.  They needed armor and as sensible as these costumes were designed, they were still sexy and hot.  Sensible for fighting and walking and just hanging out with the girls kind of style. However, could these Amazon’s fight naked if they wanted to?  I’m pretty sure they could.  But skimpy Amazon costumes of leather is now a hot topic of contention with the release of Justice League.

LEATHER SKIMPY BIKINI FIGHTERS

Justice League director Zack Snyder hired a male costume designer to design the skimpy Amazon costumes, and well, they are leather-looking and missing lots of fabric.  They’re also hot, for a hot day if you don’t have access to a pool kind of wardrobe but won’t go in to the pool or near the pool because you are wearing…leather.  However, could these Amazons fight in a sweater vest with wool leggings if they wanted to?  I’m pretty darn sure they could.

HYPERSEXUALIZATION IN JUSTICE LEAGUE?

Many reviewers are calling Snyder’s choices sexist and others are bothered by the male nudity in Jenkin’s Wonder Woman. Were there instances in both films where people were hypersexualized?  Seeing as both films attracted a lot of people their opening weekend, who was most bothered by the leather bikini clad Amazon’s in Snyder’s film.

And who was not?  Or is it simply that Wonder Woman’s depictions left women viewers feeling an ownership, where Justice League did not?

THE SARTORIUS (SIGH)

The Amazon’s are portrayed as strong, grounded, intelligent warriors in both films.  They are ferociously beautiful in their choices, training and actions.  There is a similarity from both projects.  Should Jenkins and Snyder have swapped notes during production for these particular scenes?  In both films, we see nudity and skin at different moments.

It’s not all armor in Jenkins’ film.  Reflecting on Snyder’s other films may perhaps offer us more insight.  Looking at 300, almost everyone was bare midriffs.  Everyone.  The last time I saw such a defined Sartorius muscle was in my Anatomy classes in college, and then along came 300, Sartorious simply everywhere (sigh).  They are surrounded by many Amazon costumes at different times.

LET’S GO FOR MORE MINDFUL, LESS MIDRIFFS?

Snyder’s leather bikini clad Amazons have left an impression on many, and with the wave of women and men sharing their #metoo stories, we are beginning to live in a new age.  Perhaps one that is more kind and more mindful.  Is “less midriffs” the answer?
