JAPANESE BOY, AGED 3, DISCOVERS TOTALLY ILLEGAL OPIUM PLANT GROWING IN OPEN FIELD
I can’t say I never get curious about the plants I see when I go hiking with family. Fortunately, there’s an app for that which you can use later. Just snap a picture of the flora curiosity and figure it out when you get home, hardly breaking a stride. But with this adult caveat of vague plant geekiness, I can’t say that I was even remotely on top of this kind of thing when I was younger. And speaking of younger, how about a lot younger? Because a young Japanese child, only 3 minute years old, realized he saw something unusual and wanted it identified. And it turns out that his curiosity was warranted, as it was a totally illegal Opium plant in Japan.

BOY WAS CURIOUS ABOUT PRETTY PURPLE FLOWERS, WHICH TURNED OUT TO BE ILLEGAL OPIUM PLANT
The little boy was having a nice walk with his mom thru an open field near their home in Tokushima Prefecture when he spotted a plant he didn’t recognize. It had beautiful purple flowers which is what caught his attention. Normally, he’d look it up himself in his own botanical book. So he had to ask his mom to look it up on her phone. And she was sure shocked when she found that it was the illegal opium plant, atsumigeshi. Clearly, we are all falling short when it comes to our naturist curiosity in comparison to this little boy.

LOCAL POLICE GAVE YOUNG JAPANESE BOY AN AWARD FOR HIS POWERS OF OBSERVATION
The little boy said, “I thought people shouldn’t touch the plant.” And while he’s not wrong, it’s more that people shouldn’t grow the plant, anywhere in Japan. After his surprising discovery -both of what he found and how young he is to be so engaged- he was pretty happy to receive an award at the local police station, dressed in a miniature version of a police uniform. It seems that as young as he is, he became a plant geek even younger, tracking blooming flowers at his grandparents’ house and wherever else he goes. But I think it will take a little more time before he discovers anything as interesting as a totally illegal opium plant.
Maybe a few months.
