FBI RAIDS IRVINE FAMILY’S HOME BECAUSE OF TEEN’S GARAGE SCIENCE LAB

I always wanted to have my own science lab to run experiments with. But growing up in an apartment kind of put the permanent brakes to that inquisitive dream. Yet now I think that maybe it’s just as well that I never had one. Why? Because misunderstandings with law enforcement never seem to be small or brief. And this is an example proving the truth of that assumption. How? Well, Amalvin Fritz is a 17-year-old bio sciences student at UC Irvine. And he had the temerity to create a science lab in his parent’s garage, which resulted in an FBI raid and lengthy “investigation.”

LANDLORD CALLED AUTHORITIES, WHICH TURNED INTO FBI HAZMAT AND WMD INVESTIGATION

So, how did this happen? The Fritz’s reported a leak in their home and a maintenance worker went there to address it. Unfortunately, the maintenance worker saw the garage science lab and thought it was very suspicious and let the landlord know. The landlord then of course called the authorities. We don’t know what the authorities were told. But we do know their response was…. overwhelming. First it was the Irvine Police Department and Orange County Fire Authority that responded, and thought the science lab warranted further investigation.

Further investigation then turned into the involvement of FBI hazmat teams and the California National Guard’s 9th Civil Support Team, which handles weapons of mass destruction. No, seriously. And then there was a week long investigation that had the Fritz family staying in a hotel. And this is where I just have to note that Amalvin isn’t a white person. So what was in the garage science lab? acetone, Epsom salt and cyclooctatetraene. Things you can buy at any hardware store. Weapons of mass destruction? Amalvin made it pretty simple to understand, saying, “It was a small chemistry setup. I wouldn’t describe it as anything more complex than a sixth-grade science lab.”
