Indiana Woman Dead in Snake House, Reticulated Python Around Neck

TRAGEDY AS WOMAN KILLED BY HER OWN RETICULATED PYTHON IN AN INDIANA SNAKE HOUSE

So much for common sense.  And yes, I know that’s possibly a little snarky.  But we’re talking about snakes that kill by squeezing their prey, usually by their necks.  So I really don’t understand snake fans who put reticulated pythons around their necks.  But even more?  This was in a veritable snake house in Oxford, Indiana.  And no, not a “snake” house like a theme.  But a house that was full of snakes.  And now we’ve news that a woman died there with a python around her neck.  And yes, she loved snakes.  That’s why she was in the snake house.

SNAKE HOUSE OWNER AND COUNTY SHERIFF FOUND BODY WITH SNAKE AROUND NECK

So her name was Laura Hurst.  The 36 year old appears to have died from strangulation.  The culprit?  Oh nothing too obvious.  Well, except for maybe that 8-foot-long python that was around her neck.  As Indiana State Police Sergeant Kim Riley told local media, “She appears to have been strangled by the snake.”  Really?  So yes, this still sounds snarky.  But that’s because I think Laura Hurst should still be alive.  Yes, it’s a tragedy.  But mostly because it should never have happened.  I mean, this snake house was home to over 140 snakes!  Laura had 20 snakes of her own living there that she would regularly visit, including this reticulated python.  But last week was the last visit she’ll ever make.

DOMESTIC RETICULATED PYTHONS KILLING HUMANS VERY RARE, AND THIS DEATH SHOULD NEVER HAVE HAPPENED

So here’s what makes this a little stranger than tragedy.  The snake house belongs to the Benton County Sheriff, Don Munson.  He lives next to the snake house.  But he’s also the person who found Hurst’s body.  He’s said to media that this is a “tragic accident with loss of human life.”  Yup.  That’s for damn sure.  Because it is true that python pets tend to be far less aggressive than their cousins in the wild.  Only 16 people are on the record as dead from pythons in the US between 1978 and 2009.  But these reticulated pythons can get damn large.  Which is maybe why Hurst had this one in a snake house.

I mean, seriously!  They can grow to 20 feet in length and weigh as much as 350 pounds.  But if Laura had not been alone with that snake in a snake house, she’d still be alive today.
