So I don’t know too much about India’s political system. And I really know even less about Indian political parties and elections. But I do know that this is weird, no matter where you are from. So sure, sometimes voting is a serious pain in the… well, a few places, it seems. But voting can be complicated. Sometimes the machines don’t work or bad actors hacked them. Maybe the paper ballot isn’t clear, even by design. But then again, sometimes we all just make mistakes. And for Pawan Kumar, I’d say he made at least two of them. Maybe even three! But I totally understand being angry about voting for the wrong party. But I don’t understand then cutting off your own finger.

And yes, that’s exactly what Kumar did. He voted for the party he least intended to vote for. But then he kind of lost his mind with anger. And he cut off his damn finger! So in his own words, he said he was “frustrated after the error and could not control his emotions.” Kumar intended to vote for the Bahujan Samaj Party for the second round of his northern state’s election in Uttar Pradesh. So how did he make the mistake? He pressed the wrong button. His party had the symbol of an elephant (yes, just like the Republican Party here in the U.S.). But he accidentally pressed the button for the Lotus, which is the symbol for the currently ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party.

So what did he do? He went all Yakuza gangster, “I chopped my finger for the mistake.” But the Yakuza do that as an apology. It’s not an act of frustration. And it kind of begs the question for all of us. If you were super frustrated by something you did, would you cut off your own finger? Nah, I didn’t think so.
