Florida Asks Homeowners to Smash Iguana Skulls Whenever Possible

FLORIDA WANTS ITS HOMEOWNERS TO SMASH INVASIVE IGUANA SKULLS WHENEVER POSSIBLE

So much for animal husbandry.  But I know, I know, this isn’t the usual circumstance.  The state of Florida his now home to several invasive species.  Each one is wreaking its own sort of havoc on ecosystems, properties and, of course, local species as well.  But this clarion call to bash in iguana skulls whenever possible is a little new.  But it does flesh out (so to speak) just how important it is to limit and get rid of green iguanas in Florida.  So if you are a Florida homeowner, you already know all about this.  If you see a green iguana, please go smash in its skull, killing it, if at all possible.

IF IT’S IN YOUR YARD OR ANY ONE OF 22 PUBLIC AREAS, KILL GREEN IGUANAS FOR THE GREATER GOOD

So this sounds kind of crazy, right?  The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission really needs help and has requested that every Floridian go out and kill these lizards.  Like, now.  And no, you don’t need a permit to kill these things.  Just kill them.  Bashing in their skulls seems to be the easiest, fastest method.  The details are these.  If you see one on your property, kill it.  If you see one on any of 22 areas of public land, kill it.  Smash it its skull.  The state of Florida appreciates this service.

So why the sudden call to species violence?  Well, green iguanas’ population just jumped up a lot in numbers.  This is likely due to both climate change as well as shifts in local vegetation  These lizards carry and spread some diseases.  They can and do cause damage to gardens, sidewalks and seawalls.  But that last, obviously, is of concern as ocean levels are rising everywhere.  So Florida homeowners, get out there and do your civic duty!  But keep in mind just kill these lizards.  They’re still protected by anti-cruelty laws.  For the faint of heart, trap them and then call animal control.
