FLORIDA HOUSE FLIPPERS MAKE AMAZING DISCOVERY, CIVIL WAR MEDAL OF HONOR

So I’ve always loved the idea of flipping houses.  If you’re not familiar with the term, that’s when you buy a property, fix it up and quickly resell it for a much better price.  For some people, that’s all they do to make a very nice living.  But for one couple in Florida, they found some icing on the cake with one property they purchased.  I remember finding interesting things in old properties I moved into.  But they were usually buried and anonymous in attics or sub-basements.  I never found anything as exciting as a piece of history like a Medal of Honor from the American Civil War.  That’s just totally cool. These house flippers stumbled onto a major piece of American history!

ONE OF THE FIRST MEDAL OF HONORS EVERY AWARDED WHEN LINCOLN WAS PRESIDENT

The Florida couple certainly though so, too.  Their names are Erin and Michael Kara.  They bought a house in Orlando, Florida and first started to go thru the belongings of the former owner who had passed away.  They found a box and opened it up.  But they never expected to find a Medal of Honor from when Abraham Lincoln was President of the United States.  The name on the medal is Mark Wood.  So after some research online, the couple found that there was indeed a Mark Wood who was one of the first ever to receive the honor in the 1860’s.

HOUSE FLIPPERS WILL DONATE MEDAL TO MUSEUM, A PIECE OF AMERICAN HISTORY

Erin Kara told local media, “We called it the treasure house when we were working on it because there were so many treasures in there.  I saw it, I didn’t even know what it was. But to look it up — and I mean, I researched a lot — to get the background, you know, education on it, from finding it was pretty cool.”  But even better?  The couple are thinking of donating the medal to a museum for everyone to enjoy.  So Erin continued, “Just the uniqueness of it and, you know, after researching, I saw there was only, I think, 3,500 ever awarded, and Abraham Lincoln would have been the one to give this one out, so it’s kind of a big deal.”

So that’s a treasure house, for sure.
