Most adults need about seven to eight hours of good sleep a night in order for their brain to make the connections they need to in order to function properly during the day. But sleep amounts really depend on each individual.  Some people do really well on very little sleep and some people need a lot more sleep than others. Seven to eight hours is an average benchmark but not necessarily realistic for everyone.  A healthy adult need a healthy amount of sleep.

QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER WHEN THINKING OF YOUR HEALTHY SLEEP HABITS

The five questions to consider begin with, do you fall asleep before your head hits the pillow? Do you fall asleep before your head hits the pillow?  That means you have not rested enough.  Healthy sleep in adults is really a process. It should take you about twenty minutes to fall asleep. If you fall asleep before, then you are overtired.

HOW MUCH SLEEP DO YOU NEED?  INVEST IN FINDING THE ANSWER

Do you hit your snooze button more than twice in the morning?  If you so, you aren’t getting enough good sleep.  You are sleep deprived!  Go to sleep earlier or find a way for you to sleep in. If you are sleeping in on the weekends, that is another sign that you are not getting enough sleep.  Your sleep schedule should be regular, and extreme sleeping in indicates lack of sleep.  Healthy adults should have a similar waking schedule.

TOO MUCH CAFFEINE AND HEAVY FOODS MEANS NEVER ENOUGH SLEEP

Are you drinking a lot of caffeine during the day, as in more than two cups of coffee?  If you are, this will affect healthy sleep patterns and can get in the way of your resting states. If you crave a lot of fatty foods or carb heavy foods, this is another indication that you may be sleep deprived. Eating fatty and heavy foods triggers the release of calming brain chemical called serotonin.

UNDERSTANDING WHAT NOT TO DO WILL SHOW YOU THE WAY TO BE A HEALTHY ADULT

Understand what isn’t working in your sleep habits, is the beginning of finding your how-to to have healthy sleep.  Adults who get more sleep are generally happier and more focused on needed tasks during the day.
