GILCHRIST COUNTY JAIL FOR SALE IN FLORIDA, BUT IT’S HAUNTED OUT THE DOOR
So I just can’t convince my wife to see the movie Poltergeist, no matter what I say or do. And simply forget about the Exorcist. No way is she watching that one, like ever. But she does, sort of, enjoy visiting places that are clearly haunted. You know, when you look at a place that should be totally innocuous, but there’s no way you want to go in? For some reason, my wife is sometimes willing to do that, even though these movies are way too “scary.” But I doubt I could convince her to buy this Gilchrist County Jail, in Trenton, Florida. It’s got some ghosts. And, well, it’s for sale!
HAUNTED JAIL HOUSED PRISONERS FOR 40 YEARS, BUT HAS BEEN EMPTY AND STEWING SINCE 1968
Well, first off, you would have to want to live in Florida. And this is not Miami or Orlando, folks. Secondly, what the hell do you do with a haunted jail? Sure, it’s totally period. Built all the way back in 1928. But it was only functional for 40 years, until 1968. Sure, that’s 40 years of all sorts of scary awful things that could have happened there. But it’s had more than half a century for those energies to totally marinate in the space. I mean, think about it. This was a rural jail for 40 years, in a pretty dismal era of social order in small, remote towns. This haunted jail has seen some stuff.
YOU DON’T HAVE TO LIVE IN THE HAUNTED GILCHRIST JAIL, AS IT’S A RUNNING BUSINESS FOR ECTOPLASM HUNTERS
So it has “8 bedrooms” and “8 bathrooms,” if you know what I mean. The cost of this entirely questionable purchase is a cool $140,000. But is this place really a haunted jail? Well, it sure the hell seems like it. People have come from all over the world to visit it. Some claim to have seen apparitions walking around in broad daylight. Um, that would freak me out! And we’re talking about both inside and on the surrounding grounds. And yes, there are living quarters that the county added in 1966. But the jail saw all sorts of bad things back in the day. It saw terrible standoffs, killings and more. See? An old haunted, rural jail.
But don’t worry, ifyou buy it, you don’t have to live there. It is a functioning business, still making money giving tours of the grounds and saturating you with all its crazy history.
