People Really Harvest Murder Hornets As a Delicacy?

SOME PEOPLE LITERALLY HARVEST MURDER HORNETS FOR THEIR LARVAE AS A FOOD DELICACY

It’s the summertime, and it’s a hot one, almost everywhere.  And among all the good and bad things that come with summer is the hazard posed from various kinds of hornets and bees.  Or, rather, their stings.  My wife had the bad luck of getting stung by a yellow jacket 3 times on one toe a couple days ago, and it wasn’t fun.  Fortunately, she’s not allergic, or at least not involving anaphylaxis.  But I couldn’t help but think about how scary it would be to come face to face (or toe!) with a murder hornet.  And really, could there be a better name for these things?  But I had no idea that some people think of murder hornet larvae as a delicacy.  That’s literally getting your grub on…. with grubs.  But if people want to eat them, that means other people have to literally harvest them.

A MURDER HORNETS STING IS 7 TIMES STRONGER THAT A BEE’S, AND A BEEKEEPER’S SUIT WON’T PROTECT YOU

Talk about a hazardous job!  Once single sting from a murder hornet evidently feels like someone shot you with a molten nail, like from a nail gun.  And that single bite can cause serious swelling and hurt like hell for hours.  That’s one sting, 7 times more powerful than from a beeBut if you’re allergic, I hope you have your estate well planned!  And if you got stung multiple times by one murder hornet, or swarmed by a lot of them, even the allergy free could go into anaphylactic shock and die.  So now think about trying to harvest these little beasties, and know that a regular beekeeper’s suit couldn’t stop them from stinging you.

FORTUNATELY, YOU CAN’T FIND THIS DELICACY ANYMORE IN THE UNITED STATES TO HARVEST

Fortunately, we were able to eradicate Vespa mandarinia, aka murder hornets, from the United States after we found them in Washington state in 2019.  But one place you can always find them is in Vietnam, where some people really do think of murder hornet larvae as a delicacy and something worth the hazard of harvesting.  As you can see from the photo above, Andrew Fraser is wearing a serious protective suit as he helps document this insane process of a murder hornet larvae harvest in Vietnam.  If you can handle the corresponding heebie jeebies, you can watch the video here.
