Hacked Nest Cam Scares Family With Fake Missile Threat

NEST CAM TERRIFIES FAMILY WITH FAKE MISSILE THREAT

Here we go again with another hacked Nest story.  Nest, if you don’t know, is a plugin ready home security camera.  You put them wherever you think best in your home and you can monitor what’s going on at any time remotely.  They even have speakers.  The idea is great but hackers keep getting access and scaring the crap out of folks in their own homes.  That definitely happened here.  One poor California family was having a relaxing weekend when they heard a crazy alarm sound. It took them a moment to identify what it was.  But it was their Nest camera, emitting an emergency warning that there was a North Korean missile threat.

HACKED NEST SAID EVERYONE IN LA, CHICAGO AND OHIO HAD THREE HOURS TO EVACUATE

As you can imagine, this terrified them for more than a few minutes.  Their Nest told them that there were three North Korean intercontinental ballistic missiles that were going to hit LA, Chicago and Ohio.  But the threat, obviously, was a hoax.  That was a relief.  But of no relief at all was the fact that someone hacked their Nest and had a grand ole time watching them freak out.  The Lyon family’s 8 year old son was crawling under the rug, terrified, as the adults scrambled to figure out what was going on.  After panicked phone calls to 911 as well as Nest, they realized what had happened.

KEEP YOUR PASSWORDS SECURE, BUT MAYBE DON’T HAVE HOME CAMS AT ALL?

The Lyon family assumed someone hacked the Nest service itself.  But later a Nest spokesperson said that these kinds of breaches happen because of compromised passwords.  So if you use your Amazon or Facebook password for a lot of things, don’t be surprised if this happens to you, one way or another.  Just last December a Houston family was terrified when a voice from their Nest camera threatened to kidnap their baby.  I, for one, recommend you be damn sure to find out how to have the tightest security for any device like these.  Sure, you can monitor your own home.  But it’s a broadcast to the world. Oh, and open the Pod Bay Doors, would ya?
