So this is one of those details that I keep forgetting.  Namely, that there are some countries not too far from the US where people eat guinea pigs.  Yes, they eat guinea pigs.  Not only is it not new, it’s practically its own cuisine depending on where you go.  I’d heard about this phenomenon from friends who grew up eating guinea pigs as well as those who’ve just tried it.  But I managed to forget this little, cute corner of the meat eating world.  But now, I’ll never be able to forget.  Why?  Well, because with all the ice creams people are creating everywhere, we now also have guinea pig ice cream in Ecuador.

So yes, guinea pig ice cream.  I love ice cream.  But no one needs that statement to be a disclaimer.  But I love insect ice cream just might.  And now I’ll say the same thing about guinea pig ice cream.  The woman pictured above is Maria del Carmen Pilapana.  She sells ice cream rom her own business stall in the outer edge of Quito, Ecuador.  She was out of work and has three children.  So she took some entrepreneurial courses.  Those courses involved some project challenges and Maria was all for it.

So after testing her idea for half a year, she finally brought her product to market.  And yes, that product is guinea pig ice cream.  Well, with peanuts on top, of course.  But no, she didn’t just launch her business venture with one fairly strange ice cream flavor.  She offers some insect varieties as well.  But along with her husband, family and friends, Maria had some doubts this would work.  But since launching her ice cream capade in September, her business is booming every day.  So if you want to try some, you can wait for this to hit the American market.

Or you can have a little culinary adventure.  Because now you can have a main, traditional indigenous dinner of guinea pig.  And then proceed to desert for more of the same.
