Grizzlies Center Marc Gasol Goes Paleo for Longer Career and Life

MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES CENTER MARC GASOL DOESN’T JUST LOOK PALEO

Marc Gasol isn’t just another NBA center.  But he’s also more than just one of the best NBA centers in the last 15 years.  He’s a player for the Memphis Grizzlies who was first a fan of the Memphis Grizzlies.  He went to High School at the local Lausanne Collegiate School when his older brother, Pau, also played center for the Grizzlies.  But Marc has had just a few transformations since his high school days.  A fan attending games 17 years ago to superstar today was one.  But the practically svelte 7 foot, 252 pounder used to weigh at least a hundred pounds more.  He used to be so big his nickname was “the tank.”

BEING A FATHER MADE DIET LIFESTYLE CHANGE EASY PEASY

But Marc Gasol knew that he needed to transform his diet if he was to have any kind of NBA career.  And he also knew as a father he needed to set the best example for his kids.  That’s why he now follows a paleo style diet without bread.  “I think once I had my kids that kind of made it like, ‘Look, you have to be the best you can be so they have a good example at home.’  You want to give them the best food, what’s best for them. And to me that was bigger than me and obviously it was good for me too.”  But Marc has the right support around him.

GASOL USED TO LIVE AT MCDONALD’S

He credits his family and his wife Cristina in particular.  He also hands a lot of credit to Grizzlies director of performance Eric Oetter.  Oetter helped Gasol develop and pursue a better plan.  Gasol even fasts for several hours in the mornings.  But that’s not how it used to be.  There’s a McDonald’s near his old high school that Marc credits as the most modern franchise in Tennessee.  “It’s like the best looking McDonald’s there is now. I think I invested so much in that one that they were able to put LED lights [in]. Everything is newer.”

SVELTE GASOL HAS TWO MORE YEARS WITH GRIZZLIES TO RETURN TO DOMINANCE

Gasol first tried going Vegan for a while.  Then he tried a pescatarian diet.  It took time to settle on the paleo and figure out what would work best.  But now the same is also true for the Memphis Grizzlies, whose 3rd longest streak in the NBA postseason is about to end.  Gasol is the all-time leading scorer in Grizzilies history.  He’s also played in more Grizzly games than anyone else.  It’s been hard on the Spaniard.  “At times like this it’s hard to step out because you’re so locked in, and to be honest, a little embarrassed about the situation.”  But all is not lost after this season.  Gasol still has a brilliant teammate in Mike Conley, who has missed much of this season to injury.  The Grizzlies just have to add another quality ingredient this off-season.  Gasol’s contract runs two more seasons, which should be enough time to find the right side dish to their meat and potatoes.
