APPARENTLY, THE VAST MAJORITY OF GREENLANDERS AREN’T INTERESTED IN JOINING THE U.S.
While it’s been a busy, busy bunch of days since Donald Trump resumed his, ah, duties as POTUS, I’d like to circle back to something he talked about before he was even back in office. But clearly, the crazy talk about taking Greenland away from Denmark wasn’t just crazy talk. As President again, he doubled down on how he wanted Greenland. And then he spoke to the Danish president, and the conversation didn’t go well. Well, kind of like how the conversations went when Trump told various state officials to “find” the votes he needed to win. And while just 6 years ago the majority of Greenlanders wanted to be independent from Denmark, not too many seem interested in joining the U.S. today.

ONE RIGHTWING POLL FALSELY CLAIMED GREENLANDERS WANT TO LEAVE DENMARK
And, even odder still, there was just a poll done by a GOP-affiliated push pollster that said a majority of Greenlanders wanted to be part of the US. But sometimes propaganda pops like a soap bubble in the high wind of reality. Because it turns out 86% of all the Danish citizens living in Greenland are totally against the idea of being a part of the United States. 9% are undecided, which is interesting. But a paltry 6% like the idea. I think a similar poll might do better in… Canada, which has access to all the rightwing news they can handle from south of their border.

THE PROBLEM FOR GREENLANDERS IS THAT TRUMP REALLY WANTS ALL THE WEALTH UNDER THE RECEDING ICE
So it’s an awkward situation at the least. Especially as Trump has intimated that he might consider taking Greenland by force, reality-based polls of Greenlanders be-damned. But there’s no escaping the other reality, either, which is that Greenland has a literal horde of untouched wealth in the form of minerals under glaciers getting smaller every day. The only thing I can safely say is that this story isn’t over. But gleaning which crazy thing Trump says is an actual immediate concern will continue to be a challenge.
