My Girlfriend Gets Too Damn Drunk, Too Often

MY GIRLFRIEND GETS DRUNK ALL THE TIME AND I HATE IT, IT’S JUST TOO OFTEN

My girlfriend has been getting drunk a lot lately. Like really drunk. And like a lot. I don’t know how to tell her I hate it.  I usually date guys, but I recently met a woman I was really into. She was funny and quirky and damn hot so I just went for it and asked her out. We have been dating for about a month now, which means you know you like the person, but there is yet no label to define you. Which is fine. I’m not interested in having a label right now. So she’s not my girlfriend, but we are dating.

SHE’S PRETTY MUCH GREAT OTHERWISE, WHEN SHE’S NOT DRUNK

And we get along really well. Like really well. We like the same comedy nerd videos and want to go to the same alternative poetry readings. We don’t like to shop but we like to cook together. It has been so nice to have somebody like her in  my life.

But then, there’s the drinking. Which I didn’t notice at first, or if I did, I chose to ignore it. Or maybe it’s happening more now. I can’t tell. Either way I hate it. It makes me so uncomfortable. She gets drunk two or three times a week, and it is the falling-down kind of drunk. She smells bad. Her eyes don’t open all the way. She’s not the person I like so much.

FALLING DOWN DRUNK THREE TIMES A WEEK IS JUST TOO MUCH

I don’t drink a lot, a you can probably tell. I drink one or two on occasion, sure, but I literally can’t remember the last time I got so drunk that I slurred my words or embarrassed a friend. It has been years, and that has been on purpose. I cultivate a lifestyle that includes waking up and doing things in the morning. Not staying in bed all day with an incurable hangover. It is a choice I have made about how I spend my time, and the choices she is making lead me to believe she wants a very different lifestyle.

I feel guilty complaining like this. She was just laid off. She is in entertainment so she has to “schmooze” a lot. And that is code for “get drinks with people all the time.” So it is kind of because of her work and kind of because she wants it to be that way. It is both her fault and not her fault. So then what do I do?
