George RR Martin Needs to Save Game of Thrones

THE ONLY PERSON WHO CAN SAVE GAME OF THRONES IS GEORGE RR MARTIN

Ok. So let’s get one thing straight from the very beginning. I read the fucking books. But if you don’t get that reference, don’t worry. I’ll provide a link at the end, which is more than David Benioff and D.B. Weiss did just a couple days ago. So if you aren’t one of those Game of Thrones fans, this won’t make too much sense to you. But that it unlikely, to say the least. So let’s just say that this little piece will make a lot more sense than Season 1 of GOT did to anyone who hadn’t read the books. I totally shepherded several people thru that long, incendiary year of GOT. But that was way back in 2011! Being here, today, utterly betrayed and dissatisfied, seemed impossible then. But one thing is totally clear. We need George RR Martin to save GOT, in every respect.

But not everyone agrees. So if you don’t, you’re wrong. It’s really quite simple. There’s never been a show like Game of Thrones before. But that’s because there’s never been a book series like it, either. And as I said, I read the fucking books (again, link below), so I’m totally biased. But I’m still right. In the modern era, nothing has had the opportunity to be so successful like this before. So to have the TV show be finished is…. strange. To have it end in such a dissatisfying way is… unexpected. And increasingly I get angrier about it. But I realized that the last two episodes in particular were simply awful. Why? Because I didn’t care about any of the characters, at all.

Why does that matter? Well, the show began in 2011. But I fell in love with the story when I read the first book back in 1996. That’s 23 years ago! I’ve cared about these characters since the onset of Millennials! So it’s kind of astounding I’d care nothing for them, at all, the last two episodes. THE LAST TWO EPISODES. The end of ALL their story arcs. That kind of defies the odds, right? The only other thing I can compare this to is Episode 1 of Star Wars. Somehow, a beloved story instantly became…. beige. And when it comes to art and drama, beige is a devastating term. I cared nothing for any character in The Phantom Menace.

CLEARLY, THE BOOKS MADE THE SHOW, AND THE SHOW SANK WITHOUT THE BOOKS

So here’s my theory. Just like George Lucas shat the bed with Episodes 1, 2 and 3 by making it about his own vision, I think the same thing happened with Benioff and Weiss. The took the locomotive storyline off the Martin tracks and it crashed, burned and is even a little radioactive. So George RR Martin has a a rare opportunity. He has 2 books (maybe 3?) to fully end his glorious, epic story. Who know? Maybe it will even have a different ending. But no matter what, it will FEEL totally different. It will be more informed and so will we. So George, get to it. Maybe you knew this was happening for a while now. But this is the biggest letdown in contemporary media, bar none. Take us home already, ok? It’s been a Tuf Voyage.

Because for those of us who read the fucking books (from 2013!, its been a particularly long wait. And somehow, it totally got utterly, devastatingly, unexpectedly worse. So A Game of Thrones needs to be saved. Like, soon.
