THE FREE MARKET FAILS US AGAIN, AS SURPLUS AVOCADOS IN AUSTRALIA ROT IN THE GROUND
So this is one of the ways that I know that the free market economic system that pretty much rules the world doesn’t work too well. Avocados in Australia. Because there are a ton of them there and they are all going to waste. Why? Well, the pandemic again, of course. When the lockdown hit, people Down Under stopped eating out in cafes and haven’t really gone back to their normal numbers. So the avocados that were so popular and in demand now simply aren’t. So much so, that they are wasting away in cold warehouses. The rest are going back into the Australian ground to rot away for next year’s crops.

PANDEMIC KILLED DEMAND DOWN UNDER, SO WHY ARE AVOCADOS WASTING AWAY THERE?
So how does that make the free market fail list? Well, because the price of avocados didn’t change anywhere else because of the glut of oversupply in Australia. 4 years ago, Australian farmers planted a lot more avocado trees to meet the demand from smashed avocado toast’s popularity. And now all those trees are giving up the fruit, but no one is there to eat this delicious and healthy food staple. Well, not a staple really. But it should be. Part of why I’m covering this is because I love avocados so much. They work in any meal of the day.

NOW SURE WHY HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS IN ASIA AND U.S. WOULDN’T WANT TO EAT DOWN UNDER AVOCADOS
So why are all these avocados staying as a total free market waste in Australia? Maybe it’s because someone decided it’s too expensive to even bother shipping them to, say, anywhere in Asia or the West Coast of the United States. Or maybe the other free markets said no, we don’t want our prices to plunge. That’s how the free market only works for suppliers and not consumers. I literally can’t remember the last time I saw an avocado for only 60 cents at the grocery store. But that’s the price in Australia, and in Australian cents, too. It’s a damn shame. I could eat guacamole for days on end.
