SHE THOUGHT SHE HAD A COLD, INSTEAD IT WAS HER BRAIN LEAKING
Allergies are awful. Some people suffer them year-round. But others just have really crappy sinuses and have runny noses all the time. Sniffles can be a challenge, especially if you want to have any kind of social life. Or if you like to sleep thru the night, like ever. But a woman from Nebraska discovered that her leaky face nozzle wasn’t allergies. It wasn’t a chronic cold. It wasn’t chronic post-nasal drip. But it was something freaky that could kill her! She literally had a leaky skull. Sound scary? You betcha. Doctors had no idea what was going on for years. But fortunately, they discovered what was happening, just in time. It was her brain leaking.
CAR ACCIDENT KNOCKED A HOLE IN HER HAD, 5 YEARS AGO
Back in 2013 Kendra Jackson was in a car accident. She hit her head on the dashboard pretty damn hard. But a few years later her nose started leaking, big time. But it was usually one nostril at a time. That’s kind of weird. She also started to couch and wheeze, fairly constantly. It got to be so bad that she would wake up covered in the fluid that came out of her nose. Post-nasal drip? Nope. Cold? Nope. Hay fever? Nope, nope, nope. Jackson learned to go everywhere with a box of Puffs, the popular tissues.
DOCTORS FINALLY FIND LEAK OF HER CEREBROSPINAL FLUID
So what the hell was going on? At first doctors said it was congestion, allergies or just a cold. Nope. But her nose was running to the tune of half a pint of fluid every day. That’s crazy. So Jackson realized it had to be something else. Maybe even something more serious. She was right. Doctors at Nebraska Medicine gave her the confirmation that it was something else. She had a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak! That’s the fluid that surrounds our brain. That means this poor woman’s head was leaking out of her nose, literally. These leaks can happen from head trauma. But they also can just happen for no apparent reason. A CSF leak greatly increases infections like meningitis.

FORTUNATELY EASY FIX TO AVOID AWFUL DEATH
Fortunately these freaky leaks are now easy to treat and fix. But years ago they required fairly invasive brain surgery. Now they just plug up a brain leaking with our own tissue (no, not tissue paper). Jackson made a full recovery and is catching up on sleep. Doctors will monitor her for a while to make sure she stays on the up and up.
