ROBERT JEFFRESS TAKES THE NAME IN VAIN FOR THE DEATH PENALTY
So no, this is not a joke. But if you’ve ever read the bible, you already knew that wingnut pastors ay the craziest, most vile things in the name of the Lord. But Pastor Robert Jeffress really paved the road this time, with no good intentions anywhere in sight. So we all know that there’s this really awkward one where right-to-life folks have some, well, glaring hypocrisies. But Jeffress literally said that because the Romans unfairly executed Jesus, the death penalty is ok. So sure, liturgical positions can make logic a bit squirmy. But using Jesus name in support of killing folks is just so…. Pre-Gospel. Like, un-Christian. At least when you think about what would Jesus do.

But no, don’t worry. I’m not gonna spout line and verse. But I might just mention that we’re just a tap dance down the road to hell from saying since the Romans tortured Jesus, it’s ok that we do, too. Anyways this, of course, happened on Fox and Friends. Where else? It was all about attacking Democrats, who tend to be against the death penalty. Jeffress began, “Let’s admit, the death penalty is sometimes inequitably and even mistakenly applied. We know that. And we ought to do everything we can to prevent that.”

See? He knows the death penalty is unfair and mistakes happen all the time. But then he said, “But I remind people, the greatest example of an innocent person being executed was Jesus Christ himself. He was totally innocent, and yet in spite of that, the New Testament never calls for an end to the death penalty.” So you see? Just a few words can become the Spear of Destiny, stuck into the ethereal ribs of Christ’s memory. But we all know that Jeffress is full of biblical horsespite. He’s selling spiritual snake oil. So here we thought it was the hedonists who had no shame?
