CHINESE SECURITY PLAY GAMES NEAR U.S. FOOTBALL NUKE, JOHN JELLY
Ok, that’s not good at all. Reports are emerging of a scary situation that happened last November at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People. Evidently there was an issue when Trump’s delegation was on its way in. Supposedly member of Chinese Security tried to stop whichever aide was carrying what’s known as the Nuclear Football, or Football Nuke. That’s just the metal briefcase we’ve all seen in movies. But it’s real and it carries the US nuclear launch codes that has to be in near proximity to the President at all times. An official rushed into another room to apprise Kelly of the problem. Kelly then rushed over himself and told all the US staff to keep moving forward. But that sparked a confrontation between the Secret Service and Chinese security.
SECRET SERVICE MAY HAVE TACKLED CHINESE SECURITY, DETAILS MURKY
After Kelly’s instruction that they all continue forward, reports are that a Chinese guard grabbed Kelly himself. Kelly then shoved the guard off. But here are where the reports get a bit murky. Early reports of the snafu are that a Secret Service agent then tackled the Chinese guard to the ground. The Secret Service has said that no tackling of any Chinese officials happened. But they did not disavow that a confrontation of some kind did occur. We’ll likely never know the real details. But it may depend on differing definitions of the word “tackle” and “shove” as well as “confrontation.” In any event, this is all pretty scary. The football nuke proximity is really scary.

No outsiders made any kind of physical contact with the football, which is good. We also know that the kerfluffle “was over in a flash,” even if we don’t know what really happened. We also know that the head of Chinese Security detailed that day “apologized to the Americans afterwards for the misunderstanding.” But why did it happen? For now, we don’t know and likely won’t, from either U.S. officials or from Chinese. Was this a case of posturing, or playing diplomatic chicken by the Chinese? Chinese security staff have a reputation for shenanigans with visiting dignitaries. Maybe it’s like Maverick in Top Gun “keeping up foreign relations.”
