Fenway Sign Reads, Racism Is As American Baseball

SIGN ABOUT AMERICA, BASEBALL AND RACISM HUNG IN FENWAY

Fenway Park had some confused fans recently.  So, some people at the game unfurled a giant sign that read, “Racism is As American as Baseball.”  The provocative Fenway sign caused a small drama. But security quickly took it down.  Baseball games can sometimes have drama.  They can also sometimes be confusing.  It is American baseball, after all.  But confusing political messages about racism in Boston is a bit new.

FENWAY SIGN CAUSES FUROR, CONFUSION

The demonstrators unfurled the Fenway sign over the scoreboard, so it was hard for anyone to miss.  Anyone looking up at the “Green Monster” instead saw the ambiguous message.  But this didn’t bother the Red Sox or the visiting Oakland Athletics.  It is American baseball, right?  But clearly for any fans at the game it was not what they were expecting.  Was the sign supporting racism?  Was the sign saying a racist America is a good thing?  The sign wasn’t clear.  Perhaps, that was the intent.

AMERICAN BASEBALL RACIST?  OR JUST AMERICA?

Fenway security quickly took possession of the sign after just a few moments.  Security also removed the unidentified demonstrators from Fenway altogether.  But still, no one knew what the message really meant. But the demonstrators explained their intentions later on CNN.  The Fenway sign was a statement against racism.  “We want to remind everyone that just as baseball is fundamental to American culture and history, so too is racism,” one of the demonstrators explained.

DOES STUPID PROTEST MAKE PEOPLE THINK? NOT THIS TIME

“White people need to wake up to this reality before white supremacy can truly be dismantled,” the protester said. “We urge anyone who is interested in learning more or taking action to contact their local racial justice organization.”

Red Sox officials kept their commentary to a minimum.  They merely explained that the Fenway sign was “in violation of the club’s policy prohibiting signs of any kind to be hung or affixed to the ballpark.”
