Federal Court Brings Nunchucks Back Into Legal Vogue

NUNCHUCKS NO LONGER BANNED IN STATE OF NEW YORK

I vaguely remember a buddy in college who was amazing with nunchucks.  He explained something to me that he had to be licensed to have them.  He said authorities considered them to be a deadly weapon.  It was one of those, “oh, that’s weird” things that you sort of skip.  Nunchucks just weren’t a part of my life.  But now they could be in anyone’s again, in the state of NY at least.  So what happened?  Just after Bruce Lee died in 1974, kung fu films were all the rage.  But that spooked NY lawmakers.  They had visions of street gangs ruling the streets, armed with nunchucks.  So they banned them outright.  But a federal court has overturned that, bringing nunchucks back into legal vogue.

FEDERAL COURT CORRECTED RACIST, STUPID BAN FROM 1974

The federal judge who made the ruling was U.S. District Judge Pamela K. Chen.  And yes, there is something poignant with her name being Chen, considering the racial overtones of how lawmakers outlawed nunchucks in the first place.  She ruled that the ban violated our Second Amendment right to bear arms.  She wrote, “The centuries-old history of nunchaku being used as defensive weapons […] strongly suggests their possession, like the possession of firearms, is at the core of the SecondAmendment.”  But her ruling covered all of the ban.

Somewhat shockingly, it was against the law to own one and keep it in your home inNY.  The NY ban also made it illegal to make your own or manufacture them commercially. It was illegal to ship them in the mail. Any kind of mail.  But for some reason, it was also illegal to dispose of them, too!  So you couldn’t make one, own one, ship it away or burn it in the fireplace.  Isn’t that just kind of crazy, considering gun laws? But anyway, we can all look forward to an insane spike in head injuries as every adolescent fool tries to practice at home.  At least I missed my window!
