Besides the juvenile satisfaction, it may actually be better for your health. So sure, maybe not at the altar at your own wedding. And maybe not during an interlude at an orchestra, either. So what’s going on with this advice? Well, when yo hold onto these gases, they still need to get out. And your body will make sure they do. So worst case scenario? Your inhibited fart instead makes it way out of your mouth. Really.

So this is, actually, expert advice. Clare Collins is a professor of nutrition and dietetics at the University of Newcastle. She said that holding that gaseous air in can cause anyone abdominal distension. And what’s another side effect? You “end up” “with some gas reabsorbed into the circulation and exhaled in your breath.” So sure, that’s a bit of a horror story. But you unwilling vaporous ladies out there? Take note. This can, and has likely already, happened to you. And that means anyone near your breath. But Collins warned that resistance here is futile. Like the Borg, your farts will “win out” um, in the end.

So what else could go wrong? Well, we call it diverticulitis. That’s when your gut becomes inflamed and you end up with these pouches on your gut lining. Collins and others are still researching that particular joy, so keep that in mind when you refuse to let loose. So some advice? Try not to swallow air. That one’s easy, and obvious. But what else? Take it easy on the broccoli before that wedding or hot date.
