Houston Police Department Evidence Room Infested By Rats

HOUSTON POLICE DEPARTMENT’S RAT INFESTED EVIDENCE ROOM WILL BE A SNOWBALLING PROBLEM

Rats are a problem, and can be just that everywhere.  And evidently everywhere means everywhere.  Because we’re now learning that rats have infested the Houston Police Department evidence room.  As you might guess, that’s kind of a problem when it comes to active, criminal cases, hearings and trials.  But it could literally continue to be a problem for years to come, considering how evidence tends to be needed long down the legal and law enforcement road.  But rats having infested evidence storage means more than evidence tampering.  It means spoiled evidence, inadmissible evidence.

THE RATS LOVE EATING WEED, AND AS ADDICTS KEEP COMING BACK FOR MORE

Everything is bigger in Texas, as Texans like to say.  And as problems go, this evidence room rat infestation is bigger than Alaska.  Evidence has been going missing, because rats have been chewing on and eating it.  And we now know that this has been a problem since October, 2023.  At least.  So that means rats have been eating and chewing on evidence for at least two months.  And when it comes to eating, we’re talking about drug evidence.  And a lot of it.  It seems the rats like marijuana more than anything else.  And since the evidence room stores more than 400,000 pounds of weed, the rats are munching their munchies.

But they’ve also made their way thru one case of psychedelic mushrooms, too.  But so far the rats have likely wrecked the evidence in roughly 3600 open criminal cases, up to and including cases of capital murder.  The city of Houston has retained the services of an exterminator, but apparently this problem isn’t easy to fix quickly.  Rat infestations are one thing.  But these rats are addicted to drugs and will keep coming back.  This situation will have a long-term cascade effect, considering how defense attorneys in affected cases now know about the rat-tainted evidence involving their clients.
