Nowadays, insults are pretty base.  But back in the day people had much more fun.  So why can’t you?  English teachers often used Shakespeare’s insults to entice their students to focus more when studying his plays. There are many a great insult from British slang. Francis Grose penned the Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue back in 1785, which is now accessible in the Public Domain Review.  Which means you and your cousins could have a blast with research and, furthermore, application of the Vulgar Tongue.  And the Vulgar Tongue is a hoot to browse through, enabling one to choose to be quietly vulgar or expressively vulgar.  Your choice!  You can augment your style with classic history for everyday use.

Some very fun insults that came out of the Vulgar Tongue are as follows.  ‘Blunderbuss’, is a stupid, blundering fellow.  So, the next time someone cuts you off while you are driving, all you need to do is mumble, ‘blunderbuss’ under your breath and have yourself a giggle.  ‘Addle Pate’, could also fall into that category, meaning an inconsiderate foolish fellow.  We are so accustomed to throwing out the f-bomb, why not get creative? ‘A beard splitter’ is a man who hangs with the hookers – basically a John. These may not seem like vulgar insults to you, but were cutting and smart burns used back in the day.

The funniest insult by far that comes out of the compendium of the Vulgar Tongue is ‘death’s head upon a mop-stick’ which is essentially a skinny man who looks like he hasn’t eaten in a while. Can you visualize it?  It’s very similar to a ‘duke of limbs’; also easy to visualize.  A ‘lobcock’ is a large and relaxed penis or a boring man.  Mix that with a ‘shabbaroon’, which is a badly dressed man or a mean person, and you have quite the vulgar insult!  One very similar meaning word found in this book is ‘tatterdemallion.’  Try saying that five times fast!
