EPA Head Scott Pruitt Says 10X More Radiation for Your Kids

DONALD TRUMP APPOINTEE SCOTT PRUITT LOOKS TO WRECK BASIC RADIATION PROTECTIONS AT THE FEDERAL LEVEL, POISON US ALL

You can thank Donald Trump for this one, again.  Trump’s appointee to run the Environmental Protection Agency, Scott Pruitt, essentially had an entire career in all his time before as a legal opponent of the EPA.  Pruitt has also been one of the more noteworthy skeptic doing all he can to undermine the scientific consensus that climate change is both real and caused my man.  In his time since President Trump appointed him to undermine the EPA from the inside, Pruitt has done just that, watering down federal scientific research, saying anything he can to distract the public during all our recent natural disasters.  Pruitt has also done what he can from the top of the EPA by getting rid of hundreds of employees, part of his effort to crush the professional culture at the EPA to push for more deregulation.  But if that wasn’t enough, Pruitt is now changing reality on safe radiation levels, saying that ten times (and more!) more radiation exposure for you and your kids is fine during a disaster.

NEW EPA GUIDELINES SAY MORE THAN TEN TIMES THE PREVIOUS RADIATION LEVELS NOW OK IN DEFIANCE OF ALL REALITY.  WHO BENEFITS?

You read that right.  The EPA issued new guidelines for local American officials published last month, advising that disaster related radiation exposure is safe for you and yours at ten or more times the level than the guidelines under President Obama according to Bloomberg news.  The new and updated guidelines change the safety levels established back in 2007 that stated, essentially, that no levels of radiation levels are safe.  But under Pruitt the EPA has new and unnamed “radiation safety experts” who assess that “radiation exposures of 5–10 rem (5,000–10,000 mrem or 50–100 mSv) usually result in no harmful health effects, because radiation below these levels is a minor contributor to our overall cancer risk.”  Pruitt was already a danger, but this is… truly astonishing and disturbing. Thank’s Donald Trump.

EVERY 86TH AMERICAN WILL GET A CANCER FROM NEW GUIDELINES

When asked by Bloomberg, the former University of California, Santa Cruz environmental and nuclear policy director Daniel Hirsch explained that the higher number is “really a huge amount of radiation… The position taken could readily unravel all radiation protection rules.”

The group, the Environmental protection non-profit Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility has published a document on their website that compares the two guidelines, saying previous EPA estimates make it clear the 2017 revision would mean “every 86th person would get a cancer from that radiation exposure.”

And as Bloomberg noted, the new much higher threshold described in the guidelines is part of documentation given to local officials in order to help them prepare for nuclear incidents such as reactor meltdowns or a so-called “dirty” bomb blast. So, it doesn’t change environmental regulations regarding radiation exposure, most of which are much lower—like 25 mrem annually for those living near nuclear plants.

According to MIT News, the annual maximum limit for individuals whose occupations require certain regular exposure to radiation is 5,000 mrems, with NASA having the highest recommended limit at 25,000 mrems for astronauts during space shuttle missions (when they are exposed to cosmic rays).

President Obama’s EPA had revised its Protective Action Guides last January to raise its recommended maximum radiation limit for drinking water to 500 mrem (100 mrem for “persons at sensitive life-stages), but it cautioned this was only intended for “short-term incidents”, like Donald Trump’s Presidency.
