Ecstasy Sex Drug Could Be Best PTSD Therapy for Vets

SEX DRUG TO TREAT, CURE PTSD?

Have you heard of the drug Ecstasy?  Of course, you have.  Ecstasy, or MDMA, was synonymous with the Rave scene but is a psychedelic feel good drug.  But authorities have forbidden the use of the “sex drug” for many, many years now.  The FDA listed it as a Schedule 1 drug.  But that didn’t just mean that it was illegal to use or to possess.  It also means MDMA had “no medical use” and had “severe safety concerns.”  So doctors could be jailed by authorities for doing research.  But now researches have proved Ecstasy may be the best treatment for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder patients.  And most especially military vets with PTSD.

RESEARCH GROUP WORKED 3 DECADES IN THE SHADOWS

The research group is called the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS).  They have been slowly working, almost in the shadows, for 30 years to prove that Ecstasy has huge value to help treat various disorders.  But their findings of MDMA as a treatment for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder has changed the game and may help reclassify the drug.  This would allow more legal research not just into the benefits of MDMA, but LSD and psilocybin (aka magic mushrooms).

U.S. MILITARY VETS FACING PTSD EPIDEMIC, LITTLE HELP

Military veterans in the US with PTSD have reached epidemic levels.  11-20% American vets who served in Iraq or Afghanistan suffer from PTSD.  But to make matters worse, the accepted treatments have never been very effective, leaving most with PTSD a sense of hopelessness.  But the MAPS group has finally been successful in proving just how effective MDMA can be in helping not just to treat PTSD, but to cure it.  And in recent months the Food and Drug Administration has agreed.  They now call it a “breakthrough therapy” and have allowed it to be fast tracked for review and potential approval.

LEGAL PTSD REMEDIES ZOLOFT AND PAXIL DO ALMOST NOTHING FOR VETS

So far, the FDA has only approved Zoloft and Paxil to treat Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.  But both are largely ineffective, especially for veterans.  Less than 1/3 of military patients who used either showed any improvement.  In a clinical trial of MDMA using 10 patients, 61% showed major reductions in their PTSD symptoms, so much so that they no longer have PTSD.  Follow-up tests a year later increased that rate to 67 percent.  That’s a 67% cure rate for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder that was hopeless otherwise.

HELPING VETS MAY MAKE IT LEGAL TO HELP EVERYONE

“If you were to design the perfect drug to treat PTSD, MDMA would be it,” said Rick Doblin.  Doblin founded the California nonprofit behind the clinical trials over 30 years ago.  “We wanted to help a population that would automatically win public sympathy,” he said. “No one’s going to argue against the need to help them.”  So the sex drug could now be the PTSD cure for many.  Let’s hope it’s value gets the research it deserves.
