SOME ASSHOLE AND HIS DRONE SHUT DOWN LONDON GATWICK ARPORT FOR HOURS
This week on Wednesday some limey asshole caused a “deliberate act of disruption.” But that’s an understatement. I’ve always thought the hyper regulation of drones as silly. But messing with a major airport is way beyond the pale. Someone intentionally flew a drone that was of “industrial specification” into London Gatwick Airport’s airspace. London Gatwick is second only to Heathrow as the region’s busiest. So this single drone and its operator managed to immediately impact 760 different flights and 110,000 people trying to fly. That’s why the word asshole featured so quickly in this writ.

760 FLIGHTS, 110,000 TRAVELERS INSTANTLY DELAYED AS EFFECTS CONTINUE
But these kinds of major disruptions always have a cascade effect. The number of flights impacted and the number of people whose schedules are screwed will only be known after a few days. And this is right before Christmas! A lot of people and their presents will NOT be on time, all over the world. That’s not hyperbole. Gatwick was totally unprepared for the shitstorm and many travelers had to sleep on the floor of terminals that were freezing. Others were stranded on the tarmac, trapped on planes for hours. And some who tried to escape had no way to leave the airport, despite promised transport.

So far we don’t know who the asshole is. But I hope they get what’s coming to them. Officials could have shot the drone down. But they were afraid about the risk of stray bullets and what they might hit. So whatever happened to the jammers I’ve heard about? And what about the drone catchers? I’ve seen nets. There are other drones that can ram these out of the sky. How is it that such a high-profile airport has no countermeasures for such an obvious, if random threat? I’m sure we’ll hear about this some more soon.
