Drinking Blues, Hangover Cures That Don’t Work

DRINKING TOO MUCH WON’T HELP A HANGOVER

Are you in college and drinking too much booze lately?  Or are you just drinking too much booze lately?  Do you need some hangover cures that actually work?  A nutritionist reveals which cures work and which ones really don’t work.  Stop wasting your time sucking on a garlic clove and doing jumping jacks slowly.  You smell bad and you look worse. A bunch of these cures are myths and some of them may actually be doing you more harm than good.

GREASY FOODS CURES NOTHING, THEY MAKE IT WORSE

Greasy food may feel like the best option.  It does for me. It does for Vegans, too.  Maybe them especially.  But it may actually be doing you more harm! And I hate to the bearer of bad news, but French fries bust you up when hungover! Fatty foods, according to Malina Linkas Malkani, just might be doing you damage.  “Eating fatty foods may irritate the stomach further.”  But she does emphasize the importance of drinking a tall glass of water.  News flash, hydration is key.   Bland complex carbs like bread are what she recommends if you need a cure.  And no, fried bread is cheating.

POPPING PILLS IS NOT A GOOD CURE

Pop some pills for a hangover?  Whatever you do, don’t take Tylenol with alcohol.  It’s dangerous.  If the meds you take contain acetaminophen, you may want to avoid it.   It can lead to liver damage and other issues. Liver damage surely outweighs the benefits.  And the same goes, double, for any of the ANSAID anti-inflammatories.  Think big NBA players who had kidney failure.

DRINKING MORE MAY BE STUPID

Some people use the “hair of the dog” approach.  Drinking more may feel better at the time, but it will make you feel worse afterwards.  With an even more brutal, delayed hangover.  Remember that hydration with water is more important.  Mainly because alcohol dehydrates your body.  Luckily alcohol doesn’t dehydrate your soul.  Or does it?  Feed your soul with greasy food.  Just not when you’re hungover.

SUGAR MAKES IT WORK

You need sugar, but stop eating sugary foods.  There are healthier ways to get your blood sugar up.  Fruit is better than a donut (said no one ever).  But it’s true – fruit is a much better choice. Fruit helps you absorb fiber which helps you eliminate more toxins that were developed in your system due to the alcohol consumption.  So as much as that donut idea after the already cancelled fries, sorry, cancel that too and have an apple.

JUST REST AND DRINK WATER

Vitamins won’t really help.  So, don’t bother taking them if you are only taking them for cures. The only cure that really helps clear a hangover is rest.  You need to get it out of your system.  And to prevent a hangover do the 1:1, one alcoholic drink and then one water.  Otherwise don’t waste your money.  Believe me now.  But when I was in school I would just hydrate and run five miles.  It worked, sort of.  But not really.
