Don't Piss Off Bartenders with Annoying Orders, Piss Off Bartenders with Annoying Orders and you will pay the price

NIGHT OWLS AND THEIR DRINK ORDERS BETTER SHAPE UP

Bar frequenters and night owls all have a favorite drink.  Jim may enjoy a gin and tonic, while Sophie always orders a Guinness.  We’ve discovered that some “go-to” drink orders are irritating some bartenders, especially during a rush.  We investigated why some bartenders don’t care for your drink order. And they may be silently judging you.  A summary of this research will better help you get along with the people who make your drinks.  This will help you make better bar choices in the long run.  Don’t be the cocktail gorilla in the room!  Irritating drinks are: Long Island Iced Tea, mojito, margarita, daiquiri.  There’s the “a surprise me drink”  And let’s not forget to know when to order a Guinness.  In other words, don’t piss off your bartender.

YOU PISS OFF YOUR BARTENDERS, YOU DRINK LESS

If the bar is busy or there is a sudden rush of drink orders, don’t order a drink that is time consuming to put together. Long Island Iced Tea is very irritating for most bartenders to make during a mad rush. Drinks like these have many ingredients and if a bartender has people crowding the bar, it takes too much juggling on their part.  This is a complicated drink to make because it takes four to five different kinds of liquor.  Bloody Marys fall into this category as well.  If you really desire this drink and it’s your only “go-to”, then you better tip well if you plan on coming back for more during your night out.

MOJITOS DRINK ORDERS GET FINGERS STICKY

Mojitos are a complex drink that leave bartenders fingers sticky.  If it’s complicated in ingredients, and needs a martini glass and leaves hands sticky, then most bartenders will hate making it. The muddling of the mint is challenging and the sugar and lime will only be sticky.  Some bartenders will say they are out of a certain ingredient like mint if you’ve caught them in a rush.  Be sure to get the hint and don’t order any other drinks here as your next choice!  They will want you to piss off.

MARGARITAS JUST MESS WITH FLOW

A margarita will only mess up the flow of making drinks. A margarita needs to be shaken for twenty seconds.  Those twenty seconds are crucial if the bar is full of people waiting for their drink order. Next time you are in a packed bar, watch the bartender who has to make a margarita.  They will be silently swearing in their mind.  James Bond says “shaken, not stirred,” but he’s the only one drinking at the bar.

DEMANDS DURING A RUSH ARE IRRITATING

Most bartenders are irritated when a client asks for a strawberry daiquiri and demands that they be able to taste the alcohol. It’s a ridiculous demand. Clients would be better off tasting the sweat off a lion’s back than the alcohol in a strawberry daiquiri.

DON’T ASK FOR A SURPRISE

The most aggravating order for the majority of bartenders is, “I don’t know what I want, surprise me.”  Because, nine times out of ten the client doesn’t end up pleased with the surprise. And then they often ask for something else!  So, stop irritating your bartender with your unpopular “go-to” drinks and just order something on tap or in a can, especially during a rush.  A bartender I once knew had a simple take on this idea.  When clients would ask him for something fancy at his busy Manhattan bar, he’d just reply “Budweiser?” until they got the hint.  So please, don’t get served Budweiser because you’re a tool.
