WHY IS THE DNC WARNING DEM PREZ CANDIDATES TO STAY AWAY FROM FACEAPP? BECAUSE, RUSSIA
So there goes the international neighborhood. Again. You may have heard about a new app with the name, FaceApp. But if you haven’t, it does sound kind of cool. Essentially, you take a picture of yourself and the app shows you what you’ll look like as you age. Cool, right? Well, maybe not so much this time. But why? Well, FaceApp was developed in Russia. Yup, by Russians. So what does that mean? Well, it means a lot of people may have cause for concern. And as of the last two days, the DNC has issued a warning to app Dem candidates to avoid using the app. Period.

DNC WON’T SAY WHAT THE RISK IS, BUT JUST USE YOUR IMAGINATION A LITTLE
But sure, FaceApp can do a few more things than just age you photographically. But that seems moot considering the nerve-wracking implications. Bob Lord of the DNC told Dem presidential candidates that “the novelty is not without risk.” But why? Well, what kind of misuse could those Russian developers use that data for? Lord continued, “It’s not clear at this point what the privacy risks are, but what is clear is that the benefits of avoiding the app outweigh the risks.” Huh. Well, I’m calling bullshit. Not that FaceApp isn’t a concern. But that they have no idea.

So what could it be? Well, it doesn’t take too much imagination to think of some scary things. Like, fake images. Like, fake videos. We’ve already been warned to be even more skeptical about fake videos this election cycle. We’ve also already heard about that (bad) fake picture of AOC going down on an illegal immigrant. But we’re talking about hi-tech, hi-res fakes that could make anyone’s mother blush. With reason. And as for the Dems, they are right to feel anxious. The Russians did indeed hack the crap out of their network to great affect when Trump, um, won the Presidency. But what about the rest of us? Well, I’d advise caution all around with FaceApp. You never know who the Russians might consider an asset to…. Leverage.
