Piece of Denver Shut Down Because of Prairie Dogs With Plague

PLAGUE OUTBREAK SUTHS DOWN PARTS OF DENVER, COLORADO, BECAUSE PRAIRIE DOGS

Wow.  This is some crazy situation out in Denver, Colorado.  Authorities have had to shut down parts of the city and a wildlife area.  Why?  The plague, that’s why.  As in, the PLAGUE that wrecked the world in the Middle Ages.  But we don’t have to lose our minds over this as we can treat the plague today.  But we also don’t want to mess around and let anyone get infected with this.  And since there are extensive prairie dog colonies all thru this area, officials just… shut it  down.

INFECTED FLEAS CARRY THE PLAGUE, THEN RODENTS LIKE PRAIRIE DOGS, THEN PETS, THEN US

But why?  Well, because fleas, that’s why.  If any prairie dogs have the plague, a flea can bite that critter and then bite one of us, or our pets.  And then the chain gets extended into the human realm.  So if we can prevent an outbreak, we will.  So that’s why there is a modern day plague alert.  But the timing does, indeed, suck major booty.  Because it’s the summer time!  And the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge is a popular, gorgeous place.  So it’s not a casual move for the US Fish and Wildlife Services to shut that down at this time of year.

WHILE THE PLAGUE IS ALWAYS IN THE WILD IN RURAL WESTERN UNITED STATES, WE DON’T WANT IT TO SPREAD

But it is the plague.  For now authorities expect to reopen it all shortly.  But in the interim they will monitor the prairie dogs for total safety.  No humans have caught the plague so far.  But we really want to keep it that way.  But since small mammals who carry infected fleas carry the plague when it’s out, we don’t want to take any risks.  The Yersonia pestis bacteria causes the plague, and it is still pretty common in the rural Western United States.  About 7 people get the plague every year.  80% of plague cases are the bubonic.  But if there is no treatment, the bubonic becomes the pneumonic plague.

So, hey!  This is normal.  But there’s a slippery slope we want to stay away from.  Let’s all stay plague free.
