Banned in Cosmetics 25 Years Ago, You’re Still Eating Red Dye No. 3

IT’S BEEN 25 YEARS SINCE THE FDA BANNED RED DYE NO. 3 FROM COSMETICS, BUT YOU’RE STILL EATING IT

I pretty much hate commercial food dyes.  No, I can’t taste them, nor can you.  But they’re in as astounding amount of foods that we eat, drugs that we take, and cosmetics that we put on our bodies.  And it’s still not clear to me why food, cosmetics and Big Pharma use them, as it doesn’t seem that they’re all that cheaper than alternatives that aren’t either bad for you, or maybe probably bad for you.  But Red Dye No. 3 is special, in its own way.  Because it was banned from all cosmetics 25 years ago.  Why?  Because it maybe probably caused thyroid cancer in lab animals.  But today, you’re all too likely still eating this maybe probably cancer causing food additive.

THE FDA BANNED RED DYE NO. 3 THIS YEAR FROM FOODS AND DRUGS, WHAT CHANGED?

Why?  That’s a damn fine question, and I have no idea.  But I also have no idea why the USDA decided to ban erythrosine, or Red Dye No. 3, in January of this year, from foods and (ingested) drugs.  They say the why is because it maybe probably causes thyroid cancer.  Wait, you say.  Didn’t we know that 25 years ago?  Yes, we did.  But whatever made this a priority for the notoriously industry friendly FDA in January 2025 is a total mystery.  But whatever it is, it involves more knowledge that what we’ve already “known” for 25 years.  And yet, it’s still a slow priority.  Because food manufacturers have until January 2027 to stop using it in their products; Big Pharma has until January 2028.

THIS RED DYE CAUSES CANCER, ANOTHER CUASES ADHD AND HYPERACTIVITY IN KIDS

And as a parent and educator, I’m going to be sure to mention how food made with any of the several red food dyes out there eaten by kids can have an astounding affect on creating negative behavior.  Just ask any teacher about letting their students eat something as simple as Doritos before class (“Hell no”).  Or any parent of a child with ASD who will regale you with tales of their kids going NUTS if they ingest something like Red Dye No. 3.  But apparently the United States is slowly moving on.  But what will drug manufacturers use instead?  Well, other synthetic dye options, most likely Red Dye 40.

Red Dye 40 is banned in Europe, for health concerns.  It causes hyperactivity and increased ADHD in children….  Oh, and it’s made from petroleum!  Enjoy those Doritos in school, American kids.
