CHEST DEVICE THAT WORKS AS BRAIN MODEM HAS ALREADY PASSED INITIAL SAFETY TEST
So I should be excited about this. I’ve read about where this could go in sci-fi novels for years. It’s exciting! But now that the inception is really here, I’m mostly just alarmed. Because there was just a successful safety trial for a BCI, or brain-computer interface that goes in your chest. What does that mean? It means you send and receive information directly from your brain to a computer, or network, and vice versa. In other words, it’s a modem for your brain. You have a thought, your brain sends electronic impulses and the modem turns those into readable signals.

BRAIN MODEM MEANS THAT EVENTUALLY, YOU CAN DO ANYTHING VIRTUALLY ONLINE, ANYTHING
Still not with me yet? So that means that potentially, and soon, you will be able to send text messages simply by thinking about them. Really. And yes, that does mean that there is no limit to what this brain modem, uh, means. Beyond texting, think about surfing the internet. Watching movies. Listening to music. Or, actually being fully immersed in an online virtual environment. That’s exciting! And it’s scary. Lots of folks are working on this, such as Elon Musk’s Neuralink company. This really is almost here, whether we’re ready or not.

READY OR NOT, BRAIN MODEMS ARE COMING SOON, AND A NEW VIRTUAL WORLD WAITS TO BE CREATED
The successful test that has me excited and disturbed was for a device made by the biotech company Synchron. Their two-piece brain modem was used in a trial with 4 people with ALS. It’s literally the first time that the FDA has approved a BCI device for clinical trials. These (4) brain modem devices seemed to be totally safe in the trial. And, they allowed the users to communicate by text as well as do online shopping and banking. Just by thinking and having their brain modem work as a direct bridge to the net. Obviously, this would dramatically change the quality of life for people who suffer from paralysis, or any other number of things that make communication hard.
But for everyone else? It will not only change the world, it will totally create a new, virtual one that we’ve never conceived as happening like, now.
