MAN EATS CAROLINA REAPER, REAPER TAKES MAN TO HOSPITAL
We’ve all heard of challenges for spicy foods, especially for spicy buffalo wings. You know, if you survive these ghost pepper spicy wings, you eat for free and get this t-shirt to wear with pride kind of thing. But one man took part in a chilli eating contest in New York State recently. And it took him quite some time to recover. The 34-year-old ate a chilli called the Carolina Reaper. Doesn’t that sound threatening and ominous? Well, the man ate the chilli. But then the dry heaves hit him instantly. We’ve all seen that before. But a few days later, the man had headaches so bad he had to go to the emergency room. However, these were no ordinary headaches. They were thunderclap headaches. And yes, they’re really bad.

These headaches are “crushingly painful” and not to be taken lightly. The man started getting hit with them a few days after the competition. But so did severe neck pain. The severe headaches only lasted a few seconds but were overwhelmingly painful. These thunderclap headaches are something different. What causes thunderclap headaches? A tightening of the blood vessels that deliver blood to the brain, that’s what. The condition’s medical term is reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome, or RCSV. The man’s experience was even published in a medical journal, the BMJ Case Reports. His case is of RCSV is the first connected to a chilli pepper.

So at least one doctor familiar with the case has waned anyone who’s eaten a chilli pepper who experiences these symptoms to get immediate medical attention. When this Carolina Reaper eater went to the hospital, they tested him for several neurological issues. But a CT scan revealed the constricted arteries. How could a chilli pepper do this? We’re still not sure how. But here’s a comparison to show you just how hot a Carolina Reaper is. A jalapeno pepper score 2,500-8,000 Scoville Heat Units. We’ve all had a surprisingly hot jalapeno from time to time. But a Carolina Reaper scores an insane 1,569,300 on the Scoville Scale. I’m afraid to even look at one of these things! But Guinness did name this the hottest chilli pepper in the world in 2013. But if you eat one, good luck in the morning!
