IS THERE A REAL REASON THE CPB DETAINED A CANADIAN MAN FOR 13 HOURS AND ISSUED 5-YEAR TRAVEL BAN?
Yet another Canadian has had a pretty bad experience trying to visit the United States. But this time, there’s no real way to know, or even vaguely surmise, why. Because this attempted trip to America was thwarted, with prejudice, by the CPB, otherwise known as the U.S. Customs and Border Protection. If you’ve ever tried to visit or return home to the United States, you’re already familiar with them. They can seem officious, vaguely accusative or threatening just by the way they ask seemingly simple questions. Which is, evidently, effective screening strategy. But for one Canadian man, that otherwise normal and awkward procedure turned into him being detained and given a 5-year travel ban. But why?

CPB INITIALLY ACCUSED HIM OF TERRORISM “CONNECTION,” THEN ACCUSED BANNED HIM FOR ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION
Well, officially, the CPB accused the Canadian man of an unspecified terrorism-related “connection.” And no, no one knows what that means. Because the CPB won’t say, didn’t tell the Canadian man, and didn’t use the accusation as their rationale to ban him from traveling to the United States for 5 years. Instead, after not fleshing out the unspecified “connection” to something terror related, the CPB accused him of being an “intending immigrant” and not having a proper visa. And yes, this was news to the Canadian man, who was simply trying to visit New York and New Hampshire for 2 days with his wife and kids.

FAMILY TRIP TO AMERICA TURNED NIGHTMARE COULD HAPPEN TO LITERALLY ANYONE
And there’s the fact that he owns a home in Canada with regular mortgage payments, works in Canada, and pays taxes in…. Canada. Fortunately, at least, CPB allowed his wife and kids to “withdraw their application,” or simply turn around and go back to Canada. But the father and husband Canadian man was detained and questioned for 13 hours. And the CPB confiscated all the family electronics to search them, and downloaded data from their phones. But now it’s worth mentioning that the Canadian man visited the US in 2023 for business training for 10 days, without incident. So why did they detain him, and give him a 5-year ban?
We’ll never know. Because not only is there no legal right to get an explanation, there’s no legal route to prove innocence and have a travel ban rescinded. So the moral of this story? CPB can do this to anyone. That might have something to do with why American tourism dollars could plummet by….. $15 billion.
