Canada seems like a great place. In a lot of ways Canada is a wonderful country. The quality of life for most people is good. The people are gentler, probably because everything moves at a different pace in comparison to their neighbors south of the border. But when it comes to specialized services for children and adults with special needs, this is a Canada disaster as Canada discriminates if you are over 55. Trudeau better step up. When it comes to special needs, Trudeau looks a lot like Donald Trump.
LARGE POPULATION ABANDONED, DISASTER LOOMS
On paper, it looks like there are many offerings to individuals and families, but the reality is very long wait lists and only to then be removed from them with no service. This is particularly indicative of Autism Services throughout the country, Canada discriminates. It’s the gorilla, elephant and blue whale in the room. Canada is a real mess for these services. It’s an explosive documentary waiting to happen. Canadians want Trudeau to step up. This Canada disaster doesn’t need to happen.

CUT-OFF AT 55 YEARS OLD, CANADA DISCRIMINATES
To help reduce wait lists, Miriam Home and Services announced earlier this month that cut-off for services is 55 years old. As a result, individuals between 50 and 54 years old will only be able to attend day-programs, part-time. Anyone who lives in a Miriam Group Home discriminates and they will only receive basic stimulation and some leisure activities in home.

CHANGES CAUSE UPROAR AND A SENSE OF BETRAYAL
In a letter to families, Miriam Home and Services stated that “a client must have the potential for learning new skills that will impact their daily life” in order to benefit from services. Autisme Montreal, an advocate for families of children and adults with autism, says these changes have caused an upheaval. The cuts are to “the most vulnerable, the most marginalized, the ones no one sees in society”. Seems like this sounds exactly like Trump’s vision for America.
As a result, the Ministry of Health and Social Services needs to step up and make special needs services a priority in each province.
