HOW BUSY IS TOO BUSY? ARE YOU TOO BUSY WITH WORK TO HAVE A FUN LIFE ?
I find myself booked on calls and meetings all day long. Is it too much? A year ago I started a new career that makes me very happy. I am finally working with other people I like in a sector I care about doing things that make me feel useful and satisfied. But I am definitely working all the time. My partner recently had to make a rule for me: no looking at emails before breakfast. And it’s true that I’m constantly stressed out and anxious about all the work that has to get done. But I love the work itself so I kind of look forward to getting work done on the weekends. It makes me feel accomplished and happy. But being so busy is making my friends and family feel distant and ignored. That’s not a fun life.

MY PARTNER MADE A MORNING RULE: NO EMAILS BEFORE BREAKFAST
The breakfast rule is a good one, but I think I am going to have to find other ways of dealing with having a job I actually like. I’ve simply never had this problem before. Usually it is a strain to work extra hours. It feels unfair and stupid. I am not motivated to do it, so I spend as little time as possible on the tasks. For this new job, though, I love what we are making. It all seems important and necessary and I want to put in the time to make it great. So if working more is going to make our final product better, I want to do that. It’s a conundrum that I am so happy to have and also one that makes finding a solution more and more difficult every day.

The one thing I do know is that I don’t want to be one of those people who dies having wished they had spent more time with their family. I don’t want to be an absent parent or partner.
