Brazilian Indigenous Tribes Defender Murdered, Execution Style

SOMEONE MURDERED A MAN DEDICATED TO DEFENDING BRAZILIAN INDIGENOUS PEOPLES, EXECUTION STYLE

So as crazy as things are in the United States and England these days, they’re not as crazy as things are down in Brazil.  But no, this isn’t actually a joke.  As much as the rest of the world is impacted by American and British craziness, the stakes are just as high in Brazil.  But seriously, just the insane 100,000 “wildfires” in Brazil’s forests is likely to change the world more significantly.  And now, there’s more news to cement that all is not well for Brazil, Brazilians, the world and even more, the indigenous peoples who still live there in remote forests.  How?  Well, a man dedicated to defending Brazil’s indigenous peoples’ rights has been murdered, execution style.  This is a huge loss for Brazil and the world.

DEFENDER SHOT TWICE IN THE HEAD AS HE RODE HIS MOTORCYCLE

So yeah, that’s not welcome news.  Well, not if you care about human rights, indigenous rights, climate change and what’s left of the veneer on Brazil’s democracy.  The executed man was Maxciel Pereira dos Santos.  He was at least a 12-year veteran of defending the indigenous people in Brazil, working for FUNAI.  That’s Brazil’s National Indian Foundation, responsible for the creation and implementation of government policies regarding indigenous people.  But his work ended on September 6th , when someone shot him in the head twice while riding his motorcycle in Tabatinga, Brazil, located near the borders of both Columbia and Peru.

FAMILY COULD ONLY WATCH IN HORROR AS ASSASSIN SHOT HIM TWICE IN THE HEAD

Even more horrifying than this literal execution, it happened in front of his family members.  And no, saying this was an execution is not an exaggeration.  Santos’ work over 12 years meant he defended Brazilian tribes from farmers, loggers, miners and anyone else trying to seize land in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest.  Those he defended included tribes in contact with “civilization,” as well as those not.  So far, police investigating his murder say they don’t yet have any suspects, not a motive.  A cynic might take issue with that.

But that pretty much says it all, doesn’t it?  The motive is obvious.  And as for who, it’s a big list of people who want to profit from stealing land.  And they’re all friends of the man currently in charge of Brazil.  So no, the math isn’t hard.  But the reality is.
