Brawl, Undercover Cops Attempt Arrest of Undercover Cops in Detroit

When you make a screw up, what do you say? Oops? What about when you’re the police? We all know that police screw up all the time. But that’s not an indictment of police officers. They’re in a tough position a lot of the time. But this is kind of a huge screw up. We’ve seen this exact scenario on TV and movies. But in real life? Oopsie. The Detroit police department has some egg on its face right now. But they should, especially with the news that one group of undercover Detroit cops tries to arrest another group of undercover Detroit cops. One group was posing as drug dealers. The other group was posing as buyers. What could go wrong? Well, a lot. Oh! And, there was a brawl, too!

It’s so bad that even Detroit Police Chief James Craig went straight to the point earlier this week. “This is probably one of the most embarrassing things I’ve seen in this department.” But of course, this didn’t happen just this past week. It happened way back last Fall on November 9^th. Two cops from the 12^th Precinct posing as drug dealers had a drug house they set up to attract and arrest buyers. Two buyers did show up on that day, but they were also undercover cops from the 11^th Precinct. Obviously, they didn’t know each other. But then more cops from the 11^th arrived with a search warrant and that’s when things really went south.

Local Detroit news got ahold of body cam footage. You can see both sets of cops yelling at each other. But then they started throwing punches, too. Oops. The police Chief had this nugget to add about the brawl footage. “They appeared to be like Keystone cops.” Obviously, the Detroit Police Department has launched an internal investigation to understand how this crazy embarrassment happened. But it’s not the first time something like this has happened in Detroit. Back in 1986, a similar scenario occurred. But two Detroit police died in that incident. It’s serious business and when it goes wrong, it can go very wrong. Let’s hope Detroit Police figure out how to prevent this from happening again. It could have been so much worse for these undercover cops. Again.
