Mystery: Baltic Sea Underwater Observatory Disappears

UNDERWATER OBSERVATORY FOR SCIENCE IN BALTIC SEA JUST DISAPPEARS, BAFFLING SCIENTISTS

So this is a little weird.  I’d say it’s a victimless crime.  But that’s not totally accurate.  But mysterious?  Oh yes, and how.  So you’ve got to know, or at least assume, that scientists all over the world have equipment under our oceans, measuring all sorts of stuff.  Ok yes, a lot of them are floating on top of the ocean as well.  But the ones scientists have installed underwater usually only need maintenance, if at all.  So what’s the deal with the underwater observatory under the Baltic Sea that just up and disappears?  It’s a mystery and  no one seems to have a clue where it went, or why.

WHEN THE DATA STOPPED, DIVERS STUNNED TO DISCOVER… NOTHING AT ALL BUT SHREDDED CABLE

This particular and now missing equipment has been in place since December, 2016.  The underwater observatory was managed by the GEOMAR Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research Kiel and the Helmholtz Center Geesthacht (HZG).  But this underwater observatory’s tenure ended when it stopped sending any more transmissions on August 21st, at exactly 8:15 local time.  So as you might imagine, divers went to the site to see what was going on.  But they were totally flabbergasted that the entire structure and all the equipment was simply…. gone.  All that was left for them to find was the shredded cable that used to be attached which had been the conduit for transmitting data.

REMOTE LOCATION, DEPTH AND EQUIPMENT WEIGHT MAKE DISAPPEARANCE MORE PUZZLING

But here’s the weird part.  This location was in a restricted area of water in the Baltic Sea.  That means no boats, even fishing vessels, were allowed to be anywhere nearby.  So someone went out there and, for a reason we don’t yet know, removed the equipment, pirate style.  But what about a storm, you ask?  Or crazy currents, a giant animal, even?  Authorities have ruled those possibilities out.  But why?  Well, for one, this thing weighed over 770 pounds.  And for another, the location is over a mile from the shore and at a depth of 72 feet.

UNDERWATER OBSERVATORY SIMPLY TOOK SCIENTIFIC DATA, SO WHAT COULD BE THE MOTIVE?

So what’s going on, here?  No one knows.  It doesn’t make any sense, at all.  This underwater observatory was in place to keep measurements of ocean nutrients, temperature, salinity, water flow rates as well as chlorophyll and methane concentrations.  There’s nothing too exciting about that, except for scientists and biologists.  So what’s the deal, here?  Is it metals piracy?  A bad state actor?  It just doesn’t make any sense.  So stay tuned, this could get interesting.
