YEAR 2021 OF PANDEMIC, WITH UNIVERSAL ISOLATION, TODAY IS AUTISM AWARENESS DAY
So today is Autism Awareness Day. Many people are already somewhat familiar with Autism, or the spectrum. But more and more people every day are discovering that Autism will forever change their lives. Most parents of Autistic children realize that they have to endure a level of isolation that they otherwise never could have imagined. There are a host of reasons and causes for that. But many families and Autistic people who navigate the harder symptoms of Autism couldn’t help but notice that the pandemic forced everyone to experience a new, universal isolation. But, of course, that often means even more isolation for families with Autistic children, and Autistic adults.

AUTISM AWARENESS DAY HAS TO INCLUDE RECOGNITION THAT AUTISM INCREASES EVERY YEAR
So yes, this is a first-person perspective, from a member of a family with an Autistic child. But more people every day are joining the club, with a constant increase of Autism incidence world-wide. But in 2020, the data from 2016 showed that 1 in every 54 children born in the United States are Autistic, or have Autism. And yes, that does seem to indicate a big increase. Since the year 2000, that increase is to the tune of 178%. But no, you’re not really supposed to talk about the reasons why. And no, I’m not sure knowing why would help. But for me, it lingers. And Autism Awareness Day always wakes it up.

DOES IT MATTER WHAT CAUSES AUTISM? MOST SAY NO, BUT MAYBE AWARENESS WOULDN’T HELP
But what is the cause of Autism rates today? Our awareness is totally lacking. Why did Autism barely exist before the early 1990’s? Experts say its genetics. Well, yes. But what about the human condition doesn’t relate to genetics? So I just want to highlight this, as it is virtually forbidden to ask why this is happening. Vaccines? Verboten. Pollution? Experts say no. But I’d hazard a guess that’s because coal fired plants emit tons of mercury into the air every year. Oh, and mercury was a major ingredient by the name thimerosal in many vaccines we took for years. Well, and gave to our kids. And pregnant mothers. It’s not really clear how much we even still use it. The lack of our awareness of this says a lot.

PARENTS WHO JUST LEARNED THEIR CHILD HAS AUTISM HAVE A COMMUNITY OF SUPPORTS AWAITING THEM
So if you are a parent and have just learned your child has Autism, please don’t read this and feel more upset, and definitely don’t feel defeated. At all. It’s a transition, to be sure. But there is an emerging and ever stronger community for you to discover and be a part of that will help you navigate, find resources and supports and help you make key decisions that will positively impact your child and family. But regardless, today is Autism Awareness Day. In the pandemic year of 2021. And if Autism occurs in your family, you will discover a still-hidden community you never suspected was there.
