Super Bowl Sunday Could Face Avocado, Guacamole Shortage

GUACAMOLE SHORTAGE ALERT, AS SUPER BOWL SUNDAY STAPLE AT RISK IN 2019

Ok, oh hell no.  So even in the years when I don’t really watch much football at all, I still watch the Super Bowl and I ALWAYS have guacamole on hand.  And inevitably on shirt as well but never mind.  Guac is there.  It’s always there.  But the Super Bowl just wouldn’t be the same without it.  But it’s possible that millions of Americans might miss out on their (MINE) favorite spectacle food.  Why?  There might be an avocado shortage this year.  No, seriously, there might be a shortage.  But we’re still not sure yet.  Like, maybe go buy hard avocados right now.  A guacamole shortage is just not ok.

GAS SHORTAGES ACROSS 6 MEXICAN STATES COULD JEOPARDIZE DELIVERY

So what is possibly going to cause a dip in our access to the best dip ever?  No gas.  No, seriously.  There is a gas shortage in Mexico.  Why?  A couple things, but mostly one thing.  So there has been crazy levels of gas thievery in Mexico.  So much that Pemex, the Mexican run oil company, recently changed its distribution system last month.  But the changes have made some major hiccups when it comes to available distribution.  Like, major supply shortages across six different Mexican states.  But that could mean serious trouble for getting avocados to the US.

WE NEED 120,000 TONS OF AVOCADOS TO MEET SUPERBOWL DEMAND, INCLUDING ME

Avocado farmers were expected to ship 120,000 tons of avocados to the US to meet demand for the Super Bowl.  So pay attention and get ahead of the competition.  Learn the call signs at your local store.  Don’t overinflate your tires, especially in the hotter or colder states (I’m looking at you, Patriots!).  But seriously, if you love guac as much as I do, get ahead of the game and make sure you have avocados on hand, even days early.  So buy some hard ones and hoard the joy before you share.

And by the way, I find that blending one and a half habanero peppers into near liquid form is a great backdrop to a six-avocado guac loaded with tomatoes, onion, and the occasional cilantro.  But remember your lemon juice!  It just pulls the beer in.
